The night before she leaves, Zoe sits down with a map of the city and marks her favorite places. As she does, she lovingly reminisces about each one, drawing readers into her happiest memories. Zoe then connects the scattered points with a red pencil and forms the letters of her name. This brings her comfort, and as she prepares to leave her home, she knows that she will forever carry her memories with her. The unnamed city appears to be European, and for the most part, the narrative is suspended in time; only an illustration of a movie theater showing The Wizard of Oz (and a quote from Anne Frank in the author's note) confirms that the conflict uprooting Zoe's family is World War II. An author's note explains Nuño's intention to write a book about saying farewell and appreciating the simple pleasures and small joys to be found in life. This is a fabulous book that I am sure we will read again and again. Our first reading inspired the creation of a map of good memories of our own.

Everything about this book is beautiful from the story to the illustrations even down to the little details like the texture of the tear resistant pages. I absolutely love everything about this book.

An excellent book which can be easily adapted to one's own good memories.

This is a meaningful book about a little girl who recounts all of her good memories in her hometown, in the face of having to leave because of war. War is sort of a hard concept for small kids to understand, let alone the refugee aspect. However, my 4 and 6 year old boys and I talked about the book more from the perspective of reflecting on all of the good memories of a place when having to move to a new place.The text was short enough so as not to last more than about 10 minutes or so to read. The pictures were descriptive to add more discussion to the story.My 6 year old got a kick out of pointing out that the "town square" on the map was really a circle, and the "swings" on the map was really only ONE swing. :-)What I REALLY liked about the book was that I was able to use it to extend into a lesson of creativity for my 6 year old. After the book, he then thought about his favorite places and made a map on which he could draw his name, like the character in the book did (pictured). The ability to apply a lesson from the book into a different activity is what I feel makes a really GREAT book.

This book tells the story of a girl that must leave behind her home and all the good memories and experiences of her childhood. It's an alien concept to most Americans.In the time that I write this review, the world is in terrible turmoil and even our leaders seem to seek to shirk the larger responsibility of shepherding the innocents of the world. This is a powerful and timely story that should be told to children - even though there is no happy ending.This book shows us, in away that is safe and not threatening, that the world has changed and we have bigger responsibilities to each other than ever before.The illustrations are beautifully done and engaging - and the words are well considered. The quality of materials are very high. This is an important message to instill in children to prepare them for the reality of the future. It's a tough subject to broach.Very well done.

The Map of Good Memories Hardcover.Do no get this book to read expecting to learn much about what a refuge child goes through.Instead it is more a story that you can use as a sounding board to teach more to a child about things.Can be for a child who has to leave what he has come to know and love due to perhaps a job situation or loss of a loved one.This book can be more of a teachable moment than learning very much from it.Though the story is short and simple it is also quite beautiful and sad when you are reading it.For someone to have to walk away from all they have ever known at such a young age and for the reason the main character has to is powerful.The pictures in the book I think are simply perfect for this story. Not bright with sharp edges to them but instead soft tones that give you a smooth flow from one page to another.Really enjoyed this book and can see it being a useful addition to any elementary classroom or school library.

This is a story about learning to appreciate the simple pleasures of everyday life, that we sometimes take for granted. The story is told through the eyes of a ten year-old girl named Zoe, who's family is being forced to leave their home country due to war. As she prepares to leave, she decides to use a map to mark all the special places where she spent her happiest times during her short life span. Beautifully illustrated in neutrals and washed out shades of days gone by, the book takes you through the only world this little girl has known. As an educator, I believe this wondrous book can help children understand the devastation that refugees in our current world are going through. It could also be used in classrooms as an inspirational book to help children write autobiographies, as well as develop basic map skills. I highly recommend this book.

In a current situation where refugee is a word heard daily, even by young children, I think this book is a timely addition to our library. Both my son and daughter have been curious about what a refugee is and why the word has bombarded our television and internet. Within this story a little girl has to flee her home because of war. She goes through all of the good memories of her hometown and keeps those memories close to her heart. In very simple language, the story is told about the places that she loves even though she has to go. The illustrations are simple but detailed enough to point out all of the important items of her story and add depth to the place memory. It gave me a chance to discuss what a refugee is in a way that both of my children understood and to talk about what they carry with them that makes their new place special as well.
