About the Author

Over the last forty-odd years, ANGELA YVONNE DAVIS has been active in numerous organizations challenging prison-related repression. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1944, Davis studied at Brandeis University, the Sorbonne, and with Herbert Marcuse at the Goethe Institute. Her advocacy on behalf of political prisoners, and her alleged connection to the Marin County courthouse incident, led to three capital charges, sixteen months in jail awaiting trial, and a highly publicized acquittal in 1972. In 1998, Davis was one of the twenty-five organizers of the historic Berkeley, California conference “Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex.” She is the author of many books, including Are Prisons Obsolete? and The Meaning of Freedom. She currently teaches in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

I believe that this is a very important book. In it, Angela Davis puts forth an extremely compelling case for the abolition of the modern prison system. It was a complete surprise to me to learn that the modern prison system (being locked up as the final punishment) is a fairly recent phenomenon that was considered to be very progressive and humane compared to the former shaming, corporal, and capital punishments that were meted out hundreds of years ago.This book focuses a great deal on the intersection of African American history with prison history, which adds a whole extra layer of horror to the way the system works. I'd be very interested to see how the numbers and statistics have changed (or not) in the past 15 years since it was published, but the book is definitely still relevant and informative.It's also easy to read, not dry or dull at all. Very interesting and flows well which makes the reading enjoyable even while the subject matter is often difficult.As a Quaker, prison reform is an important topic in my social circles, but I had never seriously heard anyone put forth the idea that prisons should somehow be done away with. I finished this book with a new perspective with which I wish more people would become familiar.I recommend this book to anyone who's interested or involved in prison reform, African American history, and/or social justice issues in general.

Davis has been making many of the arguments in this text for a long time, but they are clearly and cogently collected and articulated here. This is a must read primer for Michelle Alexander's more recent book, THE NEW JIM CROW. Davis, of course, brings the important insight of a woman who has been incarcerated for political reasons rooted in race. It is a thin volume but loaded with straight talk and wisdom.

Great book, fast read. I think this is a great starter book for folks who are on the edge about how they feel about the prison system. This book gives you some great fundamental concepts that you can take with you to read and understand other books about prison abolition. Plus, Angela Davis is just amazing.

Pivotal reading for anyone attempting to understand the mess that is our prison industrial complex and the way that racism weaves its way throughout its various structures and dysfunctions. Ms. Davis is accessible but challenging to read stretching us to imagine our approach to "prison reform" much differently. I particularly appreciate the way she shines a light on past practices, like slavery and segregation, and reminds us that we once thought those were "necessary evils" too. Even though she wrote it a while ago, it still has valuable lessons to teach.

It's Angela Davis, people. She will NEVER disappoint in telling it 100 and making you think. I had not really given consideration to abolition of prisons until reading this - and now I understand why this discussion is so greatly needed.

A very quick read-- something you can finish in an afternoon-- that makes you really contemplate the current state of our prisons/jails. Davis puts forth some solid arguments for prison abolition, and makes you contemplate the, "What if?" of it all.

I've read her work all through college and I can never stop admiring her for her social and political influence she's placed in a lot of WOC and can we just talk about how well written the book is. She got straight to the point and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

This is a great introduction to prison abolition and the oppressive nature of the U.S. prison industrial complex!

Bruce's books are the best! He has great advice and his tips really work! I highly recommend all his books. My two "must read" suggestions are How to Get a Man Without Getting Played and Texts So Good He Can't Ignore. I really wish I'd read these years ago! Bruce breaks everything down and makes it all so easy to understand and he has helpful tips for implementing his advice. It just takes practice!

I almost never write reviews on Amazon, but I had to log on right after finishing this because I really enjoyed this quick read about men. It was short, sweet, and not belittling in any way toward women, which I appreciated. I can safely say that the content of this book matches a lot of what my boyfriend constantly tells me he needs, wants, and appreciates. The content seems very credible and is written in a "from a father to a daughter" style. That said, the content is beautifully and simply articulated in a way that I don't think most fathers could achieve.I genuinely think every woman needs to read this book with an open mind. I myself used to be a very aggressive female in relationships because that's what worked well for me in the workplace. I learned to tone it down quite a bit when I met my current boyfriend who taught me graciousness, patience, and kindness. we've been together for over a year now and I couldn't be happier.Thanks to the author for reaffirming some things I already knew and showing me even more ways I can communicate effectively with men.

Good read. Straight to the point honest and upfront rules-with a quick why. Some of it seems like it would be common sense, but most times many women are not as aware when we get into relationship and get emotional from time to time. It's a super quick read. I personally did not find it sexist or offensive, the writer seems pretty progressive in his mindset.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it to be interesting, relevant and packed full of practical wisdom. So grateful for the down to earth, open hearted sincere sharing. Refreshing and eye opening in so many ways. Very enlightening and I highly recommend this book to everyone looking to build a mutually beneficial long term relationship/marriage.

This book not only starts off with a captivating title ( I mean c'mon whose dad told them about their younger more adventurous days) it quickly throws you into a plethora of interesting perspectives on men. Of course giving all men the same blanket to fall under sounds like it could be a bit vague but it surprised me at how much i could relate to this book. As a male I suspected this book might have been an "interesting" read, but I was pleasantly surprised and have a few female friends that I will be recommending this to.

This is a book for women who want to find the right man looking for the right woman. What I like about this book is that it talks about men from an unusual perspective. Just like women have some specific needs, men have them too (and I'm not talking about sex or physical needs).I was a little bit afraid this book would be too sexist but it's not. Although, it would be much better if it had a second part to help men understand what women need.

Most horrible , disgusting book i have read , he disrespects women, telling them to keep their vaginas clean, and after a hard day, give your man a blow job, even its a bad one !!! And to shut your mouth !! WTH !!! I would give this book negative stars , and MY dad respected me to much to give me any of his lame advice !! The only purpose this book serves is kindling for my fire place today !!

Snyder is a strong writer but this does feel like a return to form for Batman comics after the brilliance but also convolution of lots of the Morrison run of Batman prior to new 52. The condensing of the timeline is interesting, but probably frustrating for those who came to Batman comics in the Aughts. The new conspiracy within Gotham is interesting, and may get more interesting over development but it is hard to make it fit entirely with the prior to new 52 Batman comics. The art is strong, although very particular to current moment. Synder adds lots of possibilities to the new run of Batman and a new depth to Gotham, but does so at the expense of the richness of Morrison's prior new 52 run.

I'm just going to say it - This is the Best Batman Story PERIOD.I know that's a controversial thing to say, what with tons of other terrific incarnations of Batman out there, but out of all the fan-favorite movies, cartoons, TV shows and Comics, which I also enjoy, I honestly think this tops them all. Again, I know that's a controversial thing to say in the Comic Book community, but I don't care. Scott Snyder is a genius, and I hope his run on Batman never ends.For those who haven't read this, it's basically Batman VS. The Illuminati. Unlike the Illuminati, The Court controls Gotham specifically, rather than the whole world, and it's just done so brilliantly, you wouldn't even believe it. Buy this mask set - trust me, you're going to want that mask when you're done reading the included books.

This paperback collects the first seven issues of Batman Volume 2, which launched in 2011 and received lots of praise from critics and fans alike. The team of Scott Snyder (writer) and Greg Capullo (artist) may be the best team to handle Batman since Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee created the "Hush" storyline eight years earlier. Snyder's writing seems to be just as smart as Loeb's, but each book is a quick read and not at all exhausting. While nobody can touch Jim Lee's illustrations, Capullo gives us some very sharp and wonderful images to look at. However, this book is only the first chapter in the fascinating story of the Court of Owls. I highly recommend picking up the next volume, "The City of Owls," to get the rest of the story. Chances are you'll want to keep reading the work that Snyder and Capullo have done with Batman.

Gorgeous art and a great story so far. They have some variant art at the end and those are SO much better than the cover that was chosen. This is my very first comic book ever but I’m beginning the new 52 for Batman. I received a free digital comic so I chose a Doctor Strange one which is also good.I ordered the hardcover but received the softcover so I’m immensely disappointed about that. I reported this to Amazon and they said they’ll investigate.

I’d been out of the comics loop since the departure of Joe Madureira from Uncanny X-Men, so it’s been a minute. As a longtime Marvel devotee, I asked my wife, who’s all about DC, where to start getting into it based on my preferences. This is what she suggested, and after reading through the whole volume in just a few hours, I’m hooked. This is easily my favorite series since about 1991. Highly recommend it for anyone who likes cerebral plots, action, and the darkness that’s defined the franchise for decades.

The Batman\Joker 'Endgame' storyline that has been building over the space of the past few issues culminates in the 7th New 52 Batman trade. After a less-than stellar series of sidestips in Vol.6, Vol.7 showcases Batman at his best. Scott Snyder has put together a nail-biter of a conclusion, bringing in the Court of Owls, along with a coterie of Batman's long-term adversaries, and throwing them into the mix of a Gotham driven to the brink of destruction (again) by The Joker's virus. It would be unfair to discuss how it all plays out, but things come to a head in a grand finale that will dramatically affect the Batman line for quite a few issues to come. Highly recommended.

Story just didn't do it for me.Got all the Graphic Novels in this story arc for Christmas 2016. I read them twice hoping I would like it better the second time. Didn't work. I really can't put a finger on why they fell flat with me. Wish I could. The look of the books and artwork are top notch but something about the story itself just didn't do it for me. Batman seemed so inconsistent from other books. He struggled mentally and physically with things and people that in other stories he would have made quick work of. If Batman is the world's greatest detective and greatest martial artist is other stories then he needs to be in every story. Can't have it both ways. Art, whatever form it takes, is very subjective (writing, painting, sculpting, etc.) so I can only speak for myself. I wanted to love this story arc but just could not.

Scott Snyder and Greag Capullo are an amazing creative team. This story is incredibly entartaining and fascinating. Snyder is a great writer with a knack for psychological development and making Gotham City feel real, ancient and alive. Greg Capullo is one of my favourite artists and seeing him working on Batman is wonderful.The Court of Owls was such a fierce and interesting opponent that, even if these villains were completely original and never seen before, it quickly became a fan favourite, when it comes to villains. People want to see the Court in TV series, animated series and even the Ben Affleck movies. That's how good this story is.I strongly reccomend this story arc and everything Snyder has written for Batman. It's an exciting new spin for longtime Batman fans and it would work great as introduction for new fans who never read comicbooks.As icing on the cake, the box set is ungodly cool and the mask is awesome, it looks just like it does in the story.Very satisfied with the story and with the quality of the product. Also, the price is more than reasonable.

This is a good book to have while studying Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji mainly because the guide uses Roman letters almost all of the time. There are a lot of debates on whether students should study Japanese with its Roman spelling, but as a beginner who is just getting acquainted with the Japanese writing system, this may help some with pronunciation and memorisation.At the same time, as someone who is currently in the process of attaining fluency in Mandarin, learning as many phrases as I can is helpful in building every day vocabulary. This book has everything from casual conversations, asking directions, to answering immigration officers. This is truly the best book to have if the language learner plans on visiting Japan for practical use of what they have learnt.

Overall, I think this book can be a quick guide for beginners who want to learn useful Japanese phrases. Although the book introduces hiragana and katakana, everything is written out in romaji which makes it easier for people who haven't mastered reading hiragana and katakana. Each chapter consists of key vocabulary words, phrases and a sample dialogue. I thought that the sample dialogues were clear and useful, and I also liked the descriptions of some of the most popular tourist attractions that can be found in Japan. There are many other books that go into great detail in terms of grammar, but for people who need to learn some basic Japanese for traveling, this book could be a great fit.

This is a wonderfully concise and practical guide for a tourist who wants to make a good impression with native Japanese speakers. I found the dialogues and vocabulary to be very practical and authentic, not too formal, not too casual. This would also be a good first guide to the language for someone who plans to live in Japan.I would have preferred the dialogues to also be written only in Japanese, without romajii. But I realize casual tourists wouldn’t benefit from that.In summary, this is a most practical guide and intro to the language. The situations and language are very functional.

While there are some good bits in this book there are errors in the Japanese, errors in the English, and many formatting inconsistencies which spoiled the book for me.

Overall decent for beginners, but if you want a more extensive review of kana or kanji, I would suggest a class, or genki. However, it is a decent choice for starting out and getting a handle on basic phrases.

I think this book is a pretty good, basic book. The lessons are useful and provide some good information. The illustrations are useful and I enjoy the particle guide. I think the book could be better with the organizations, and I think that it would be better to use hiragana with the romaji in the beginning with things such as the dialogues. Overall, this would be a good resource to use alongside of other study books.

Ideal for tourists who want to speak and understand a little Japanese. As a kindle book the price is ideal. The book is a mix of phrase book, cultural information, and a basic introduction to grammar. It includes romanji, kana and kanji for each sentence. I saw a preprint version of this book.

This is clearly made for someone that does not know Japanese at all. It's very clear in the way that it is written and has some useful grammar and vocabulary points, but it isn't particularly helpful for people who already know the language.Still a good book :)
