I'd read that stories of resilience can help you build your own ability to recover from setbacks and tragedy in your life. A search for that type of story is what led me to this book, and it was excellent.Miss Purdy's book is not a glossy magazine blurb about how perfect her life has been. Instead, she bravely and humbly detailed her dark times and doubts, and it was really helpful to read.It is not uncommon that we only see "the final cut" of someone's success story, which is unfortunate, because much can be learned from what was left on the cutting room floor.Amy's story does not crop out detours. Not only do we learn of dreams fulfilled more than she could have imagined, but we also see some laid aside, delayed, or swapped for new ones. This is valuable because it is true of life: it isn't always certain why we must move on or let go, and it isn't always certain what we should dedicate our focus toward. Amy lets us see her making moves in uncertainty. That is a big part of bouncing back.Most helpful, I feel, was her awareness of how she was able to recover hope after setbacks. How does a person keep moving when meeting one roadblock after another? That's where Amy's story excels. It is full of specific examples, the wells from which she drew strength. In each of her trials, she cites a special inspiration. I really enjoyed reading the story of Amy's triumph in both the Paralympics and Dancing With the Stars after she overcame a devastating blow to her health. She lost both legs beneath the knee and had to have a kidney replacement after suffering through a debilitating sudden bout of meningitis when she was just 19. She made her living as a masseuse and was a committed snowboarder - both of which are very physical and require you to be on your feet. After the amputation, no one knew how much of her mobility she could recover. She didn't waste a lot of time feeling sorry for herself, and even walked down the aisle at her sister's wedding less than 2 months after the amputation.Amy's indomitable spirit and lack of self-pity comes through on every page of this memoir. I don't know how many ways there are to say "inspiring" but certainly every other reviewer has already covered this ground. Her missing legs don't define her. She wrote that "obstacles in our lives can only do one of two things: stop us dead in our tracks, or force us to get creative..." She definitely did the latter! She couldn't do anything about the loss of her legs, but she could carry on with her life with passion and creativity and that's what she chose to do.I had missed her season on DWTS, so went to YouTube to find the videos of her performances, which were incredible. I also watched her brief, emotional TED talk. Amy has learned that "a fulfilling life isn't based on what we have or don't have; it's based on what we give of ourselves". She is a determined, energetic survivor who will continue to give.

If you want to be inspired; to be amazed; to be challenged; this book is for you. For Amy Purdy the impossible is the challenge she needs to start her on figuring out how it can be done. With the amputation of both below the knee legs at the age of nineteen lit seems that all the dreams a young girl has were condemned as unrealistic. Read the book and learn how Amy not only follows and succeeds in accomplishing her dreams, but goes way beyond. She enters the Olympics as a snowboarder for America in Russia. But as soon as that is over she catches a plane to speed back to the US to practice dancing on DWTS. I watched her dance and she is unbelievable. This is a great book to give to a discouraged young person, or to anyone going through tough times (as we all eventually do on this trip through life!). Thanks Amy! I love your attitude!!!

I don't watch TV so I have never seen DWTS and did not know who Amy Purdy was until ebook bargins featured her book. Her story sounded interesting so I just started it and couldn't put it down until I finished it. I also googled and watched her Ted talk and dance segments as she wrote about them so I got to "meet and see" Amy as I read her amazing story. Hgihly recommend this book- an extraordinary woman with an incredible story. We all have a choice as to how to live our lives, Amy's choice to rise above her pain and circumstances to reach her larger purpose in life has inspired me and touched my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit and soul to show us what is possible when we ask "if my life were a book and I was the author, how would I want my story to go?"

I believe that this book is even more timely and significant today, than ever before. Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex (originally published in 1949), is a groundbreaking study, that was clearly years ahead of its time (it still is), in providing a thorough and well-thought-out thesis, that examines what/who has shaped the role, place, and personality of Women in the world at large, from the ancient societies of Mesopotamia right down to the present time. Clearly, we already know the answer to that one! However, what’s different about Simone de Beauvoir’s tome, she doesn’t let all the "women" off that easily, since she readily admits that not all "men" are responsible for the forced or assumed conditions of inferiority, mistreatment, injustice, inequality, etc., and all the other miseries that the "men" in "charge of the world" have imposed on women, and on other men for that matter. She also allots and assigns blame to the inactive, ignorant, narcissistic, and parasitic woman (her words), for not truly rising up against this system, and not just for women, but for all of humanity. Here are some excerpts that I found to be exceptionally important and relevant, and right-on-the-mark.From pages 381 – 382:"The girl’s character and behavior express her situation: if it changes, the adolescent girl’s attitude also changes. Today, it is becoming possible for her to take her future in her hands, instead of putting it in those of the man. If she is absorbed by studies, sports, a professional training, or a social and political activity, she frees herself from the male obsession; she is less preoccupied by love and sexual conflicts. However, she has a harder time than the young man in accomplishing herself as an autonomous individual. I have said that neither her family nor customs assist her attempts. Besides, even if she chooses independence, she still makes a place in her life for the man, for love. She will often be afraid of missing her destiny as a woman if she gives herself over entirely to any undertaking. She does not admit this feeling to herself: but it is there, it distorts all her best efforts, it sets up limits. In any case, the woman who works wants to reconcile her success with purely feminine successes; that not only requires devoting considerable time to her appearance and beauty but also, what is more serious, implies that her vital interests are divided. Outside of his regular studies, the male student amuses himself by freely exercising his mind, and from there emerge his best discoveries; the woman’s daydreams are oriented in a different direction: she will think of her physical appearance, of man, of love, she will give the bare minimum to her studies to her career, whereas in these areas nothing is as necessary as the superfluous. It is not a question of mental weakness, of a lack of concentration, but of a split in her interests that do not coincide well. A vicious circle is knotted here: people are often surprised to see how easily a woman gives up music, studies, or a job as soon as she has found a husband; this is because she had committed too little of herself to her projects to derive benefit from their accomplishment. Everything converges to hold back her personal ambition while enormous social pressure encourages her to find a social position and justification in marriage. It is natural that she should not seek to create her place in this world by and for herself or that she should seek it timidly. As long as perfect economic equality is not realized in society and as long as customs allow the woman to profit as wife and mistress from the privileges held by certain men, the dream of passive success will be maintained in her and will hold back her own accomplishments."From page 612:"Cinderella does not always dream of Prince Charming: husband or lover, she fears he may change into a tyrant; she prefers to dream of her own smiling face on a movie theater marquee. But it is more often thanks to her masculine “protection” that she will attain her goal; and it is men---husbands, lovers, suitors---who confirm her triumph by letting her share their fortune or their fame. It is this need to please another or a crowd that connects the movie star to the hetaera. They play a similar role in society: I will use the word "hetaera" to designate women who use not only their bodies but also their entire position as exploitable capital. Their attitude is very different from that of a creator who, transcending himself in a work, goes beyond the given and appeals to a freedom in others to whom he opens up the future; the hetaera does not uncover the world, she opens no road to human transcendence: on the contrary, she seeks to take possession of it for her profit; offering herself for the approval of her admirers, she does not disavow this passive femininity that dooms her to man: she endows it with a magic power that allows her to take males into the trap of her presence, and to feed herself on them; she engulfs them with herself in immanence."I couldn’t have said it better myself! This should be a must-read for any woman starting out on adult life, because it clearly lays out the forks in the road we will experience, and explores the human condition of half the population with a relatively objective eye. I found it stunningly relevant today, to my life, as a professional woman in technology.

Read this as a philosophy graduate student for fun with an amazing group of men and women. I echo the sentiment that it should be required reading for ALL adult humans in the 21st century, if only to gain a better understanding of how gender constructs have been so woven into our collective experience for so long, and why they need to be demolished. Are there better constructed arguments in existence? Yes. But that doesn't diminish the lasting contribution that this piece of literature has made to humanity, nor how revolutionary and ground breaking it is. So ahead of its time. It is also filled with wry humor, which is rare for a philosophical text, and even rarer for that humor to stand up nearly 70 years later. Is it going to be difficult for some readers to get through? Yes. It is intellectually demanding. But then again, so is being a contributing participant of society. It is worth your investment. I recommend reading it with a diverse reading group and discussing each chapter in person each week, over beverages.

This will be a long and arduous read, but I have learned a great deal from the very beginning. One of the best purchases I have made ever. It should have been required reading in my collegiate experience.

The pacing of this book is really nice. It eases you into it and gets you in the rhythm of learning the coding process before it jumps up in difficulty. Saying "one hour a day" is a bit misleading, but no more so than diet books claiming to have you lose 30lbs in 30 days. You'll have to put the work in, but I've looked around for a lot of different C++ books and this is a great one to learn from

My 12 year old Daughter is using this book to learn C++. She likes it very much, but breaks the learning into smaller chunks than one hour per day. The only downside is that the book is so concise that she never comes to her Dad for C++ questions.

I bought this book to help my son out with a programming class. The lessons seem to be ok. My main complaint is the book completely ignores the Macintosh in the setup of an IDE or compiler. The author couldn't even be bothered to insert one paragraph to tell Mac users to download Xcode or follow the same instructions as Linux users. Yeah, Mac OS and Linux are very similar under the hood, since Mac OS is based on UNIX. But the author doesn't even mention it. Very disappointing to have a computer book that ignores one entire computer platform.

First C++ book that I am reading that is not so cryptic. Author explains the "whys" of some programming issues that other authors don't even address. I am half way through, and I am understanding more from this book than when I took C++ as a college course. Good job, Mr. Rao.

This book is a wonder as a child who only did basic python programming before this I understood everything the book had to offer. While if you are someone who has trouble finding time to sit down or has all summer but just cant pay attention this book is not for you. It does not do a good job of keeping you attention like some other books do. For me, though, this book was a perfect fit and I enjoy the language.P.S. : C++ is not a suitable first language to learn as it is one of the harder ones. I recommend javascript and python to get started I chose python and used a colorful book called Python for Kids. It is published by No-Startch-Press and they have books on many other high level programming languages including javascript.Edit: The name associated with this account did not write the review her son did.

I just finished this and found it to be a good read. I am a New Orleanian who returned within a few weeks after the flood.Rivlin's book pays appropriate attention to the Lakefront and New Orleans East, which were largely ignored by the media at the time, who focused so heavily on the Lower Ninth Ward. It well describes the role of Baton Rouge as a major safe harbor, temporary home, and hub for many of those eager to return. The book brought back many memories of immediate post-Katrina of Orleans: the terrible smell of the air, refrigerators on the street, dishonest contractors, National Guard in the city, and the "Katrina cough" that most of us had. I feel that it also gives an honest discussion of the racial issues and the desire of many whites to use Katrina as an opportunity to downsize the black population of New Orleans. There is a whole more to the book, of course, but these were things that I particularly appreciated about it.

An extremely, well researched book on the many facets, factors and individual response to this great "Natural" and man-made tragedy. In so many ways a Sad, condemning time in the racial history of this country. For black people another reaffirming example for how through the lowest times, still we are able to Rise!! May New Orleans continue to be the unique, wonderfully ethnic diverse place it has always been in this country.

Recently released, Katrina, After the Flood, by NY Times reporter, Gary Rivlin, is a rich and focused look at the efforts to help New Orleans recover and is full of lessons for any one who cares about improving conditions in America's cities. There are some inspiring successes and too many colossal failures in the efforts to bring New Orleans back. There are the depressing and even comical leadership failures of Mayor Nagin and President Bush but even more disturbing is the sheer inability of government bureaucracies to even care about being effective. In the chapter entitled "Eight Feet Across," Rivlin describes how the state of Louisiana hired a consultant to map out how to use HUD funds that had been provided for rebuilding housing. His flow chart laying out the steps required to secure HUD funds was eight feet across. Said an official working on the recovery, "It took us six months just to get two feet." Even in the midst of one of the worst disasters in our lifetime, HUD could not get out of its own way. Many American cities face the same challenges of disinvestment and population loss that devastated New Orleans (although in a more slow burn kind of way) and an effective public sector will be essential to their revitalization. But we are going to need to revitalize or recreate the agencies that are suppose to help.

I loved Katrina: After the Flood. It's a terrific read that walks us through the horror of Katrina from the time when it hit through the rebuilding of New Orleans. The writer, a former colleague of mine at the NYTimes, brings us into vivid conversations and discussions between the New Orleans Mayor, the Louisiana Governor, President Bush and other key officials, as well as the people who were appointed to plan and execute the reconstruction. He describes gripping and heartbreaking scenes during the ordeal, and introduces us to fascinating characters whose lives were upended by the flood. I don't think I understood the magnitude of the devastation, the challenges of rebuilding a ravaged city, or the racial and economic inequities that the hurricane exposed and sharpened until I read this great book. A must read.

Gary Rivlin writes his journalistic account with the readability of a novel. You'll get to know people who created some of the greatest misery in the history of this country, and you might even understand how they came to do it. If you weren't in New Orleans during the hurricane and recovery, you'll be shocked by the stories. And if you ever wondered how the human will can triumph against terrible odds, you might learn something here.

An interesting well written read, however once again the fantastic work of the St. Bernard Project and volunteers who have helped rebuild 100's of homes and lives in and around New Orleans, has been totally overlooked. SBP has been a huge factor in bringing back to life communities not only in St. Bernard Parish, the Lower 9th, New Orleans East, Gentilly ... but now also on a State-wide basis, following other catastrophic natural disasters including both Texas and S. Carolina just this year. It would be interesting to see their efforts mentioned in such detailed reports about Katrina and rebuilding NOLA.

This is a wonderful, in-depth report of what happened in NOLA after the camera crews packed up shortly after Katrina. Along the way, we get to know key people and their impact on the attempted recovery, the efforts to leverage this "opportunity" into a means of reinventing NOLA, and not for the better. The reporting is thorough, the writing is crisp, evocative and empathetic. Anyone with even a slight interest in this recent American tragedy would do well to read Rivlin's book.

This is a book about an important event in history that reads like a novel. Gary Rivlin has found some very interesting characters with different perspectives - from a friend of President Bush's leading the planning after the storm to a radical community organizer working on the ground - and he weaves their stories together to build a really compelling story about what has happened to New Orleans after the storm. Originally sent by the New York Times just after the storm hit, Rivlin apparently found the story hard to leave behind. He follows characters as they initially evacuate New Orleans or stay put to weather out the storm, and then try to navigate the maze of recovery efforts - some working to shape those, some just trying to figure out how to put their lives and neighborhoods back together. A really engrossing read.
