I've been an Empowerment Self-Defense instructor for over 16 years in Belize, Central America. This book is an excellent resource to get young women (and really women of any age) to pay attention to their environment, make use of their instincts, and be safer in their every day lives. This book reinforces what I teach in my classes and hopefully what many people teach. It's a great tool for someone as an introduction and hopefully impetus for them to take a self-defense course, but also an excellent way to review what's been learned before. I am recommending this book to all of the women and girls who have taken my courses. I look forward to obtaining the other books in this series.

Yes, yes, and yes! I already have 2 books that a friend gave me, but I should have just gotten this one in the first place. I only became a plant lady in the past year, but I now have plants and/or cuttings around my apartment. Next up are herbs. I needed something that gave me basic-to-intermediate information for handling problems with my green things and propagating them. This book doesn't talk down to the reader, but it gives a lot of good basic info as well as stuff none of my green-thumbed friends have mentioned. I now feel like I have a great resource for turning to when I want to add to my collection as well as nurse the ones I've been going wrong with.If you ever wondered which type of plant is best for your personality, your home, and your capabilities, this is the one.There was one minor disappointment: there is no mention of one of my first plants - the Hawaiian Ti plant (or Cordyline). It's the one giving me the most problems.If you love plants but are just starting your collection, GET THIS BOOK!

We thought the Dummies book would be the last houseplant book we'd ever need. Wrong. Try looking up ferns. There's but one entry in the index: "ferns, propagating from spores, 252, 327." Want to know how to care for ferns? Do they like sunlight or shade? Moist or dry? Keeping your fern healthy? No information except that it is difficult to grow them from spores. Come winter I'll use this book as kindling.

Feel like you do not have a "green thumb"?, yet know friends or family that can take a dead stick and make it grow? This is a perfect book for anyone wanting to get houseplants started, enjoying them, and also helping put oxygen back into your home. From the very easy beginning houseplants such as an airplane plant, or prayer plant (it gives both the "botanical" names and common names, to more exotic plants such as moth orchids and beginning Bonsai's, the book explores the in's and out's of hundreds of houseplants. Watering, fertilizing, when to repot, what is easy to grow, what is more difficult, pests, how to rid pests naturally, without chemicals, and even a whole section of color photos of your most common houseplants are included. The tips are incredible. I have loved house plants for years, but have not grown them in a long time. As soon as I opened the first chapter, the book had me excited about having houseplants in every room. Great book for the novice to even intermediate house plant person. Great gift idea also.

Really useful for a newbie to houseplants. Lots of clear, helpful advice on houseplant care basics, including light, watering, fertilizer, temperature, humidity, etc.A lot of common houseplants were included by name, but sections on specific plants were a little too perfunctory to be very useful. If you want a lot of in-depth information on a particular plant, this isn't the book for you. However, I found that information on specific plants is easy to find on the internet, but the general knowledge that houseplant fanatics take for granted was harder for me to find, and that information was laid out nicely in this book.

So what if the organization of this book isn't to some peoples likings (as some reviewers have remarked)! This book saved several of my tropical plants lives. I'm a long time plant lover and propagator but was unfamiliar with tropicals and a few other plant families. I primarily raised cacti and spider plants.I was baffled by the brown bumps on my White Bird of Paradise plant but figured they were a part of the plant since they looked like wood bumps. After reading this book I found out they were bugs called Scale which suck the life from the plant and, when hatched, can jump from plant to plant. I also found out that what I had thought was just a problem with dust was in fact mildew, another potentially devistating disease. My plants are now all very happy.I have hard water in my area and found out about the need to use vinegar and water to "rinse" the salt from the soil in hard water situations. I've also always suspected that the tags that come with plants are bogus and this book explains exactly why. I was so surprised about this book to tell you the truth. I got it from the library to see if I could figure out the above problems then had to buy the book.I have other books that have all the "pretty pictures" but they are typically useless. I'd rather have a book that was informative and accurate. If you ant to keep your plant healthy and happy for the length of it's natural life, this book is among the ones to add to your shelf. If you want a book for plant identification then either get a Peterson Guide (all very good) or do a google image search with "tropical plants" or "flowering indoor plants", etc. I do that when looking up new varieties of herbs, medicinal weeds and other plants. Find the name then use a book, not all websites are good information.

This book is great...but wish there was more info on some common plants...

I wish it went into depth more but it's good enough to learn the basics from. I had gotten it from the library first so i knew exactly what I was buying. Lots of handy information.

I do botanical painting and don't always have fresh flowers for reference-- or my specimens die before I finish my representation. Thus, this book provides a handy reference. It also informs the artist as to what is typical of a various flower forms. It is always in my painting bag.

The books are out of print and I know there are sources on line to find pictures that artists can copy. The thing I like is having a book. I like to flip from page to page pulling together my own combination. The pictures give clear shots of different types of flowers. It's a great resource for my library and I am completely sure the photos are all free to use.

some of the flower pics are truncated and doesn't show the entire bloom and nearest leaves

The used copy of this book I purchased had more sun fading than I expected. The pictures appear a strange color, not vibrant at all. If I were purchasing it again I would choose a better quality if it was available. I feel I paid too much for a poor quality of the used book.

This is an excellent reference book. Beautifully done. highly recommend this.

I like point of view stories of Cinderella. This story uses discrimination of fair skin, green eyes and blonde hair that differs from brown skin, brown eyes and straight black hair of the Egyptians. She was indeed the Cinderella who had her slipper taken by the great falcon god Horus. It was dropped in the lap of the Pharaoh who felt the gods gave it to him as a sign. He finally found his bride. A different slant especially with black or brown skin discrimination here.

I have been getting my books for my art lessons for my students from the public library and the school library. I started running into books that couldn't be located or books that were out of print. So I have started to buy my books in order to have them when I want them. The Egyptian Cinderella book and any of the other ones like this are a great source to have at hand. This books is colorful and gives the students a view of how an artist sees the characters in the book. I do Egyptian profiles with my second graders every year (they look forward to being able to do this project as second graders)and this book has great examples of different styles of headdress, hairstyles, patterns in the egyptian collars and colors. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Egyptian culture.

I found this story when I was helping in a second/third grade reading group. The kids enjoyed the story and the pictures are incredible with detail and color. Purchased for our family's 5 yr. old who loved it! It's the oldest known Cinderella story. It seems that just about every culture has a Cinderella story! The back cover gives detail about the story and other "Cinderella" stories.

The Egyptian Cinderella is a really great way of introducing children to the ancient Egyptian culture. They are able to relate to a version of Cinderella that they are more familiar with and see how it is applied to the ancient Egyptian culture. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful and visually appealing. A wonderful book to be used by teachers during a Cinderella unit.

Dick is far more concerned with lyrical prose than with providing any useful information. He is remarkably successful with the prose -- I'm sure he writes great fiction. But this book takes multiple paragraphs to convey such tautological gems as "you can open a brewery in the city or in the country", yet omits any useful details such as the risks of trademark conflicts, or production schedules appropriate to different mixes of brewing vessels, fermenters, and bright tanks. He waxes poetic -- in German, no less -- about tile floors, but if you're looking for details on the relative merits of tile compared to various treatments of concrete, you will be disappointed. But you will enjoy reading the two pages he takes to tell you that those are the options available to you.Two stars because the table of contents provides a nice list of things you should think about if you are founding a brewery. There's no need to read further unless you are tired of your poetry anthologies.

If you know how to use Google, this book isn't worth much. Lots of anecdotes and stories which are fine, but if you want any detail or real guidance look to the Internet. The entire chapter on finding a property could be summed up as make sure you have room to grow, hopefully; the rest is fluff (all 4 useless pages). Wanted something that gave more detail about starting a brewery, but for the most part it's just a vague account of what it took to start a brewery in the 1980s. Good read, but don't expect it to answer (or even help ask) tough questions. This book reads like someone trying to fill the word limit on a paper. Very disappointed. Better info on probrewer forums.

I was hoping for more detailed guidance around financial and operating ratios that could help me in developing realistic proformas for starting or evaluating the purchase of a brewery..

I am trying to start a brewery and this book is my guide. I'm only 6 chapters in and it has already changed my mind on several concepts i was set on doing. I'm not sure that "Guide" is the correct description for this book. It reads more like a narrative of the author's experiences, experiences of others in the industry, and history of the craft brewing industry. A very enjoyable read, but far from detailed enough or specific enough to be a primary reference for opening a brewery. It is, however, full of practical advice which the author shares from his personal experiences and/or examples from other breweries.

This is one of those books where I really did have fun reading. The book really try to help you understand the terms and provided flashcards to do so. The only problem I have is that the CD doesn't work and I bought the book as new. The book has a pretty comprehensive review session at the end of each section. Reading Chapter 1 and 2 really does help before moving on to other chapters.PROS+ Helpful+ Easy to read and find information+ Review sectionsCONS- CD doesn't work- Ordered new but came in the mail looking like it's been tossed around- Older edition of the book provide better flash cards than the Second edition. The flash cards on the Second edition feels cheap.

This is a good book for an introductory level course/self-study program. It breaks down the terminology by body system (one body system per chapter), so you know what parts of the body to relate the terms to as you progress through the book. This book is nicely organized, easy to follow, and easy to understand. It is extremely helpful if you are entering the medical field. It has flashcards in the back of the book that help you test yourself, but they are not indispensable. You could make them yourself. It is by far one of the best introductory texts available.

About the Author

Katherine Kennedy has done needlework, mostly cross stitch, for as long as she can remember. But when she discovered Swedish weaving, Katherine just knew this was what she was meant to do. Her other passion is creating, so when she couldn’t find patterns for this newfound needlework, making her own designs was the natural solution. Within a short time, she was selling items at shows and in local Scandinavian shops. Katherine also started teaching, and it was her students who really encouraged her to look into publishing her design patterns. Just over a year later, her first book, Easy-Does-It Swedish Weave Towels, was published. She now has a full line of chart packs and kits that are distributed worldwide. “Many times I have had someone respond wistfully that they remember their mother or grandmother doing this type of needlework, perhaps even teaching them the basics, and they haven’t seen it for years. Just as exciting, though, is the reaction I get from those who are discovering Swedish weave for the first time,” says Katherine. She has been asked if she ever stitches just for fun, or whether it’s always for publication or sale. Katherine answers that it is always for fun, because she never tires of Swedish weaving, whether it is creating a new design, stitching one of her many designs or charting patterns. Katherine has been inspired by some of the old pattern books from the 1930s and ’40s. Most of her designs are original with a contemporary flare; even so, she also tries to maintain a more traditional look. She and her husband, Mark, live in Minnesota. I purchased this for my 4000 level Mammalogy class. After the second week I discovered that 19 hours of all math and science classes was a bit much and with Mammalogy being the only optional class I was signed up for - It was the class that had to be dropped. I was devastated since it was my favorite of all of my classes, but it was the right thing to do. Anyway - even though I won't be taking this class until the spring, I still find myself reading this book. It's complex enough that you feel like you are learning something when reading, but clean enough that you don't really need an instructor there to fully understand. Now this is not a deep study of the systems and such, rather an overview of the different families and their systems and structural differences. This is an excellent intro to mammalogy and covers everything from the evolution of the different systems to distinguishing features. Very good text book. I would have liked a few colored pictures but it's not a huge issue.

The organization is somewhat poor, in my opinion. I had it for my mammalogy class in college and it was difficult to read and take the necessary information, as there was so much. It goes off on tangents, rather than summarizing things better and connecting facts. Unless your professor assigns it, I would suggest a different book.

Confusing to read if you don't get the key terminolgy right away...

I absolutely love this book! The story of Thomas realistically illustrates what kind of bullying happens in school. My professional goal is to be proactive in bullying prevention because it's much more effective than being reactive when bullying occurs. I am using this story for my 3rd grade lesson plan in bullying prevention. Not does it cover the theme of social injustice, but it will address the standard of character descriptions and motivations.

As a therapist that does many groups with youth, I'm always looking for books that can hone in on certain topics and bullying is a big one. This book has great graphics and the story is phenomenal. I've primarily used this book with tweens and it always gets a great response from the group members and really gets the discussion going.

Great book! I have really loved reading this to some of my classrooms (I am a school counselor). It is also easy to build a guidance lesson around, use in classroom meetings or just to open discussion. I highly recommend it.

This was such an awesome book for my 7 & 9 year old. It applies to real life situations. Then explains how to work through the tough moments. Even better - it talks about each character. Itâ€™s not just â€œdonâ€™t listen to the bullyâ€™s mean wordsâ€, itâ€™s more, and goes a bit deeper.

I used this book in classroom guidance, small group, and individuals. I love that it provides a male perspective. It also does a great job of showing how bullying affects the target and how the target can take their power back. I love all of their books.

Kids bullied at school really relate to Thomas, the main character. It also suggest some creative ways to increase self esteem.

Great book to showcase bullying, and loved that it had discussion questions at the end.

My daughter really enjoys this version of Hansel and Gretel. Itâ€™s for intermediate readers ages 6 and up. There is also a movie based on this book by scholastic on dvd.

Purchased for my classroom. Children loved the books. They were at a level east for all students to read and enjoy.

Love the story and illustrations.Its !y grandson's fav book.

I teach music. The Theatre Arts teacher and I used this book in a project we did on Hansel and Gretel. The kids enjoyed looking at the booking and reading the story. I am glad we bought it.

It got here when it was suppose to.. It really is the story of little red riding hood.Wait..

I bought the book for my 6 year old grandson. He's just learning to read. The book was easy to read and he really enjoyed reading it to the family. A really great book.

We watch as his questions gradually lead to the key information he needs to help a woman with an anxiety disorder develop a personalized plan to take a dreaded long distance flight to visit the family she yearns to see. We see him try to figure out if an elderly woman's problems are part of the long-term depression that he's helped her keep under control for years or whether dementia is at work.During the representative week, we also experience the struggles of patients struggling with eating disorders, bipolar illness, a delusional disorder, an opioid addiction, and alcoholism. In all of these encounters, Goldbloom is offering much more than medication. We see him honing in on possible approaches to the enormous difficulties many of these patients are enduring. We learn of Goldbloom's supportive visits to a patient's chef assistant training program. We watch him try out a role-play activity for a man who wants to know how to explain to a potential date that he has recurring problems with depression.Of special interest to me, as the mother of a daughter living with schizophrenia, is when we see Goldbloom working with a 38 year old man who has suffered from schizophrenia since early adulthood. We're living in a time when public mental health literacy campaigns are overly focused on people who are thriving despite some kind of mental health condition. People coping with the most severe illnesses are ignored. Goldbloom doesn't ignore them and the description of "Ben" doesn't minimize the impact that schizophrenia has had on his life.In dealing with "Ben" and other clients, Goldbloom works to contact and involve families. Goldbloom and Bryden, in fact, dedicate the book to people with mental illnesses and their families. They repeatedly make clear the crucial role that families often play in supporting people whose illnesses have impacted their ability to manage the complexities of daily life.The book integrates the sensible positions that psychiatry can take in dealing with the many controversial issues it confronts. Throughout numerous encounters we see the authors carefully consider the rights of patients while also balancing their need for treatment, treatment that their severe illnesses often prevent them from understanding that they need. We watch patients receive electroconvulsive therapy that can help them recover from severe, disabling depression. The history and research about this much-maligned option is conscientiously examined.The title of this book is striking. In asking "How Can I Help?" Goldbloom and Bryden focus on the fundamental question that should continually inform all interactions between mental health clinicians and the people they serve. At the same time, it opens the possibility that the psychiatry profession itself might want to know what we want from it. And since I have a lot of wants, I don't want to miss this opportunity to tell the profession of psychiatry about two areas they could improve:1. Improve public mental illness literacy campaigns.They are failing to provide basic information about bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.2. Work harder to collaborate with family caregivers.I know that the ability of our daughter's psychiatrist to collaborate with us is the reason she's been able to experience years of stability. However, I too rarely hear of psychiatrists working to create this kind of relationship. These skills need to be taught in programs training all clinicians; how can service providers hope to make the best medical or psychosocial rehabilitation choices if they are missing the essential information that family caregivers can often provide?It matters that some psychiatrists have begun speaking out about the importance of working with families committed to helping get the best possible outcomes.The Goldbloom Bryden book demystifies the knowledge base of psychiatry and lets us know what practitioners should be doing. While the chaos that severe mental illnesses often brings can't yet be prevented, at least we can better understand the kind of help that should be available.
