So much to discover in this book, it sparks discussions about a whole range of topics from evolution to gay rights, to travel, to race relations. The author has done an amazing job updating a Where's Waldo concept to make it more inclusive and complex. His sense of wry humor is evident on every page so I actually will help my daughter look for the weird sea creatures without wanting to wrap myself in a straightjacket. I am going to be giving this at every elementary school kid party we have!

I never know what to get my 8 year old nephew but this gift was a hit! He loves to "beat me" by finding the mermaids before I do. There are so many creative characters too. His favorite is the Babysitter and mine is Mer-pug. This is now my go to gifts for all the kids in my life.

So much to say about this amazing book!Chuck, the author, has done an amazing job. His sense of humor and use of art is outstanding and I cannot put the book down.Every elementary child should have a copy!!

Well worth reading in order to understand microfinance as it existed through 2011 (a year before publication)! However, I wish it had (a) given a better explanation of the high interest rates being charged to borrowers; (b) explained why the industry seems preoccupied with this "neoliberal" view of capitalism that steers it away from subsidies; (c) covered the many lending and collection practice abuses that seem to exist between the theory and the practice of microfinance. In the end, I was left wondering why the author would recommend less money for the industry so as to prevent the aggressive overextension of credit but not also recommend limitations on profit / interest rates. As I understand it, there is no reason why MFI's can't reform to be social businesses. You don't want to be a charitable NGO? Fine. Just don't be a blood-sucking for-profit business that oppresses the poor. "Social business" is a new distinction that can split the difference.

It is impertinent to question the effectiveness of charitable efforts, and this makes it difficult for anyone to raise doubts about the practice of microcredit, which involves lending small sums of money to the poor at high interest rates. But if the purpose of the charitable efforts is to help the poor, rather than to gratify the donors, then someone really does need to investigate whether the practice actually works. That person is David Roodman in this book.The quick - and for most donors very disappointing - answer is that there is no convincing evidence that microcredit is an effective tool for bringing people out of poverty. There are many stories of people who have indeed worked their way out of poverty after accessing microcredit loans, but there are also many stories of people who have worked their way further into debt. According to the author, the most reliable research into the effectiveness of microcredit does not indicate any net positive effect on the incidence of poverty. Microfinance as a whole, however, particularly microsavings accounts, does provide a very useful means for the poor to manage their money.Intuitively these findings make sense. In Western countries, poor people who save money tend to improve their lot, whereas poor people who max out their credit cards tend to stay poor. Poor people tend to borrow money more often to meet today's needs than to invest in high-return business enterprises. Finding food for today is a more pressing concern than repaying a loan tomorrow.The surprising thing about the findings is that they tend to contradict the virtually unanimous voice of microcredit proponents over many years. Presumably the microcredit myth has lasted so long because it appeals to our paternalistic instincts as donors, romantically portraying the poorest of the poor as skilled entrepreneurs just needing access to capital (when what they really need is opportunities for decent employment), portraying women as better managers of money than men (when in reality they are perhaps more susceptible to coercive demands for repayment), and suggesting that poverty can be solved through a simple commercial transaction (when much more complex structural change is required).The author does not confine himself to investigating the effect of microfinance on financial poverty. He also considers the impact on freedom and industry building. He presents his observations in a measured and impartial but very engaging and readable manner. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is concerned about serving the poor effectively.

Deserves six stars, but I'll give it five. I've never read a book so closely. This is an outstanding piece of work - I could go on, but it would just be more of what I've said. The consistent rigor and fairness of the book is fantastic, and I learned a ton. Extremely useful for our work in building rural lending cooperatives and ag coops in Tanzania. Thanks, Mr Roodman - a massive amount of work went into this, and I hope you will continue to write more, and perhaps also to issue further editions of this fine book. It deserves a central place in the microfinance canon.

If I could move to Rios Azules, I think I would, but only if I could be a part of the Danger girls. These deeply founded friendships are the epitome of what we should all strive to have in real life. This book kept me guessing and had just the right amount of intrigue to keep me from putting it down. It also makes me want to go back and read the other ones just as a refresher on all the other characters. I can't wait to see what Ms. Verde comes up with next!

A very good story with fantastic characters who continue to grow through each new book in this series. Love this series.

Alexa has become on of my favorite authors. I have so enjoyed this series and I know you are going to love it too. This book is well written, action packed, and full of intrigue. I really love the Danger Girls and how they stick together when one of them needs help. Touch of Danger was the kind of suspense that keeps you reading and then wow...not sure I saw that coming! Verde does a great job of bringing in a touch of inspiration without it feeling preachy. I think my favorite character was Julia. She is caring and yet misunderstood and yet still very caring.If you are looking for suspense, romance, and inspiration...I recommend this book and the rest of Rios Azules series. Each book is standalone yet builds upon one another with touches of the Rioz Azules characters cameoing without giving too much away from the other stories. I would recommend these from teen on up.
