As I recently noted in my review of another Black and White digital book by Michael Freeman, I am not a huge fan of the "stars" method of review. I think this is a book that is worth the price for any photographer who (like I do) likes to learn by reading and likes to "get under the hood" a little bit, and wants to work with Black and White digital processing of their images.Much like the Freeman book, this book is divided into 3 major sections. Freeman goes into some detail about B&W photography history comparing film to digital capture. Davis, instead, uses his first section more as a "philosophy of B&W shooting" piece. Both are well done, but different. The second two sections in both books are similar, going first into the actual process of B&W conversion and processing, and then giving some creative advice, example and perhaps motivation.I thought the first section in Davis' book could be thinned by about 2/3. It just seems to repeat itself, and repeat itself. But then, maybe I just don't "get" it. He also has a tendency toward "flowery" language. At times it may be a bit overdone, and at least for me, I found myself noticing it, instead of the straightforward information it was trying to impart. But we all speak and write our own way - and to each his own. None of the criticism here should, in my opinion, deter a purchaser. This is a very good addition to my own library, and I learned (and will no doubt continue to learn) a lot from it.Once you get into the second section - which is really the meat of the book, the learning ramps up. Davis does a great job - almost in a "cookbook" formula, of illustrating a number of ways to handle B&W conversion, along with the whys and hows. He gives - in most instances - a step by step explanation of how he does the processing (mostly in Photoshop) with enough information to see and accomplish the result, without getting into an "in-the-weeds" tutorial on Photoshop. I like that. I will get, as he recommends, my Photoshop basics from other sources.I recommend this book and think it is well worth the price.

I've worked with computers for 25 years. I had no interest in digital photography. I've been through it all before - upgrades of both software and hardware, trying to keep current on new features you probably will never need, etc. I figured it would be the same with Photoshop and digicams...and it has been. Plus, I have a traditional darkroom and 40 years experience with film ...and all my film cameras are paid for! However, I started reading Mr. Davis' blog. He talked about the unique possibilities with digital B&W that are much different from traditional photography. I've corresponded with him several times. He's well aware that a lot of us cannot justify upgrading hardware and software every 18 months. Thus, in many ways, his book is a reference manual. It deals with new ways to apply core functions of Photoshop, and many techniques are cross referenced in the book. I have CS2, which is about the oldest version I would use, since Mr. Davis strongly advocates shooting in RAW and uses ACR extensively. I have been pleasantly surprised at how valuable this book has become to me in a short period of time. For example, the chart on page 68 was quite helpful to me. With anything digital, you can "process it" for days, trying for perfection. The chart indicates levels of digital B&W. Sometimes, you may want "gallery quality;" with other shots the "quick and dirty" approach is just fine. It's all in this book. It's the single best book on my type of digital photography I've found. It's a wonderful book, just to browse. The printing and layout are of the highest quality, and Mr. Davis' photos are stunning. The techniques Mr. Davis suggests are illustrated with complete step-by-step instructions. As long as film is manufactured, that is what I will shoot. However, scanning negatives and trying out some "Photoshop Magic" is starting to make photography fun again. If you are just beginning with Photoshop, this book will be somewhat intimidating. Still, it was all new to me, and I find it's now an essential reference after about six months. In summary - this has been a great book for an old film guy. If you are interested in producing wonderful digital B&W prints, this book is the one for you.

I had seen Davis' videos on youTube, and was very impressed by him. I bought a couple of his books initially, and then several others so that I now have 9 of them. Each one, so far, is excellent--it is taking me longer than I expected to read them because there is so much information to absorb. If you want to learn whatever the subject matter of the book is, from the concepts behind the subject (night photography, lighting, etc.) planning for the picture (e.g., the use of lightboxes to create translucent pictures), to the detailed post-processing of them in Photoshop or equivalent, you will not be disappointed--at least, I haven't.One of the particularly great things about this book, specifically, is that it really helped me understand what photographs are good candidates for B&W conversion, as well as how to start seeing the world in terms of light and dark tones.

While desaturation can yield black and white images good images require much more than that starting with a good composition, proceeding by tonal and color balances before making it monochrome. The author provides many insights on how to make interesting black and white images. For me at least Black and white while not necessarily better than color is different and just as complex.

I purchased this book because I am thinking about taking the course to get a better grasp on my service agency operations. I do not expect to be a Lean Six Sigma pro after reading this book but I did expect to get a little bit more of an understanding of it once reading. I did not so I did not finish it and I am returning it. It is too technical for a beginner and most of the concepts are just not explained very well. I've seen PowerPoint presentations on the topic that explained the subject much better, even if you don't have a yellow, gree, or black belt. I understand that maybe the author does not want to give too much info if you haven't taken the course but reading still felt like a waste of my time and money.

Lean Six Sigma for Service is a topic of increasing importance and economic and competitive factors require us all to make a difference rather than just doing more with less. That distinction is at the heart of Michael George's book and central to his idea of putting both Lean and Six Sigma practices together. This is a good introductory text for understanding both techniques and how they can work together.Lean Six Sigma for Service has been out since 2003 so this is not the first review but in today's context the value and relevance of this book is in question. George does a nice job of describing the processes and its application at Lockheed Martin and Bank One. Those descriptions cement his credibility that he has done this work. However they do not shed light on what that work actually was. I found this book surprisingly conceptual and technical with limited applications and actual examples - illustrations of the principles yes - but this is what we did not so much.The success story vignettes are written at such a high level as to categorize the scale of benefits that Lockheed Martin and Bank One achieved. It would have been much better for George to go deep on one project, show a worked example and create value for the reader. The success stories themselves also focus on back office activities (invoicing etc) which while a role for these technique are not the areas that will get breakthrough service levels.These are weaknesses as that experience is definitely there but it does not come out in the book. When it was written more than 5 years ago, the author may have been concerned about revealing too much and devaluating his consulting practice. But now with people coming round to wanting to understand and implement, this is not a book for them.There are other little things that are interesting gaps in the book. On a subject matter basis there is no mention of Motorola's role in creating and deploying six sigma. From the books perspective only the people that Mr. George worked with were the creators and the innovators. That is unfortunate. Another gap is the lack of discussion about information technology and the role that this plays. Even in 2003, IT had a role to play in Six Sigma and lean - particularly at an enterprise scale, but the book is mute on these things.So, if you are looking for a general discussion of these concepts then this is as good as any other book. However, if you want to understand how to do these techniques and apply them to service you will need to look elsewhere.

One of the challenges faced by an organization such as ours - a financial services/non-manufacturing organization - is translating the concepts of Lean Six Sigma into a format usable by its employees, as well as overcoming the natural inclination of employees to think of Lean Six Sigma (and other 'quality' initiatives) as only suitable for manufacturing.Michael George does an exceptional job of demonstrating how to apply Lean Six Sigma approaches to service organizations. His writing style is very easy to understand, and for the executive/manager, he provides a good overview.This book is pretty high level and conceptual, but is well worth the read for anyone looking at Lean SixSigma.

Lean Six Sigma defends the doubtful proposition that higher quality, higher speed and lower costs can be simultaneously designed into the key business processes of any company. The focus of this book is service companies, though many examples are from manufacturing companies. The author elegantly makes the argument; but adds a great deal of content that is more-or-less a technical HOW TO manual for doing Lean Six Sigma in the reader's own service organization. If you are more of a philosopher than an engineer, these passages may make you impatient. If you're an engineer, you will almost certainly want the companion handbook that the author has also published, focusing on the analytical tools. Through his very logical, thorough, precise and methodical narrative, the author transforms a doubtful proposition into an arguable one. Given the importance of the goal, that's a major accomplishment and well worth your devoted attention. It will have to be devoted, rather than casual, because the book is rather too long for philosophers like me. I learned more than I needed to know. Most of that length is for left brain people who are needed to implement Lean Six Sigma for Service. However, the right brain reader can get nicely grounded thanks to this book.

I agree with the other reviewer that this book is too repetitive and not particularly ground-breaking. I would only recommend this to a completely novice Lean Six Sigma practitioner.

I used the original Guide for years before getting this updated one, and have always found 'em useful. At least they get you into an area that has been productive in the past. I've found several of 'em that had about nothing, but that's balanced out by guiding you to quite a few with good prospects. In all honesty, while it's nice to find some colorful and/or historic stuff, I love just wandering around out there in that immense silence with the rest of the world and its troubles, a long, long, long ways away. It is essential perspective.

The good.- Well written & entertaining. I would definitely want Mr. Kappele sitting at a campfire with me on a field trip. He is knowledgeable and a great storyteller.- I have the Kindle edition, so it is portable without adding bulk in my backpack.- I have no doubt that beginner and experienced rockhounds alike will find this guide quite useful to have along for their first few trips into any part of Nevada.The bad.- There are several photographs in the book but they are in black & white. Rather low definition B&W at that. The two color photographs on the front & back covers are beautiful, but the B&W photographs dispersed throughout the guide might as well be photos of coal lumps or mud clods. Maybe this is only in the Kindle edition, I don't know.- The author early on states that he has omitted the locations of turquoise because "any good mines would be off-limits and any areas not in production would be played out!" Now that's a paraphrase, but wow. Tell me the location and the situation and let me make my own decision to go or not.Other than the turquoise omission it is reasonably comprehensive covering everything from marble & chert to black opals.

Do NOT buy the digital version if you expect to be able to use this book to navigate to collection sites. Simply impossible to use, impossible to read maps (or navigate to the maps, since Kindle readers don't reference page numbers). You can read the text, but don't expect to be able to use this reference for anything more than a good read if you buy the kindle version. Get the paperback, instead.

I bought this book because of the reviews, and I was expecting to get a book with colored photos. It's hard to identify a rock or gem from a black and white photo if you have no idea what you are really looking for. Had I known this from the beginning I would have just bought it for my Kindle and saved some space in my book case. I'm sure the book is loaded with great information (as I have not yet read it).

I think this book is my favorite. I get all the maps and descriptions, plus GPS readings to the sights. Could not be more pleased.

My husband and I have been on several rock hounding adventures suggested in this book. Nice pictures and great description of the areas. The areas are well defined and overall easy to find. It has really been a lot of fun. It is like a map to adventure. I would definitely recommend.

This book and the Idaho, Northern and Southern California versions are great. Well written and fun to follow. I found the rock above thanks to this book. Still not sure what it is but it's real cool looking in person!

Excellent resource. I would have rated it 5 stars if the pictures were in color. Black and white pictures don't clearly identify the rocks.

I must admit I real dislike stories that have a secret that is held by one of the main character's that last through most of the story. This did just that. The "secret" I figured out after a few chapter's, can't believe everyone else was so blind.This is a clean story with only a few kisses. The romance builds so slowly it was practically non existent. But, the story had some suspense, twists and great secondary character's too.Our H was a patient man and thinking he didn't deserve anything. He helps the h find her voice and that was special watching it unfold.We have no cheating, some villains, no cliffhanger, HEA, an epilogue only 3 months in the future. I can't improve on the blurb, so not trying. Just what you may discover reading it. (ljb)

With the flip of a card Adelaide’s father lost a wager with an unscrupulous scroundel and his daughter was the prize.Bree proves she’s a masterful story weaver in this tale of an cold, arrogant father who drank and gambled away his family’s fortune. In a final bid to recoup some of his losses he wagered his daughters hand in marriage and sealed her fate. Or did he? Fate is a fickle lady and you’ll have to read it to see what happens!

I love this series because the main characters are at first broken, but then become whole again through love. This book brings some past periphery characters to the forefront. We learn more about them and get their love story. I highly recommend this series and this newest book.

Ok guys, here we go. This is one fantastic page turning bombshell that grabs your attention from start to finish. You have your whirlwind of emotions and adventures that keep your head spinning. If you can't sink into a good book, its not worth reading. And let me be frank, this is definitely an absolutely amazing tale. The characters are intriguing, complex and realistic. Their personalities and individual qualities that carry them forward and progressed them through the roles created for each one. Well developed, balanced and perfectly relatable. The scenes so vividly detailed. They flowed smoothly and each scene described to perfection that made for a remarkable bockdrop. Varying contrasts added a little spice to the mix for full flavored appeal. Bree definitely knows her stuff. Not a dull moment. I loved the banter and chemistry between the two main characters. All the twists, turns and unexpected surprises kept it fresh and exciting. Bree did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. A word of advice my friends, when you grab your copy, pull up a comfy seat, a snack, kick back and relax. You won't be putting this little jewel down for a while. To top it off if you're like me you'll read it again and again. Yes my friends it is that good. Great job Bree, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.I received a review copy of this story.

It is truly another five star read.If you read Betrayed & Blessed and wondered what happened to Matthew Turner – where was his happy ending? – well Destroyed & Restored is his and Lady Adelaide Cartwright's sweet love story. As with her other books, Ms. Wolf allows her interesting characters to make either pivotal or cameo appearances in subsequent stories within a series. Which is what she did with this book. I loved getting reacquainted with Tristan and Beth, and catching up with their love match.I look forward to the next book in Ms. Wolf's Love's Second Chance series.Disclosure: I received a complementary copy of this book via Prolific Works from the author. This one of her best works. So many tough subjects she combines to make one fabulous story. Adelaide lives with her family. The dad is an alcoholic and a gambler. One a losing streak he puts his daughter up as his bet and loses. Thankfully she has friends who intervene and set it up so that she is "won" by Matthew. He soon realized that she came from an abusive household. He had an abusive father so works on being a better man. He has to work on teaching Adelaide that she is stronger than she thinks. She finds out she has a sister which adds another complication. Matthew knows she is hiding something from him which is yet something else that they have to find a way to deal with in their marriage. So many issues and complications to overcome. How they manage to find there way through is worth the read
