Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left, by Roger Scruton

Review

"The book is a masterpiece, its rather too clever title notwithstanding. In crisp, sometimes brilliant prose, Mr. Scruton considers scores of works in three languages, giving the reader an understanding of each thinker’s overarching aim and his place within the multifaceted movement known as the New Left. He neither ridicules nor abuses the writers he considers; he patiently deconstructs them, first explaining their work in terms they themselves would recognize and then laying bare their warped assumptions and empty pretensions." ―The Wall Street Journal"Scruton’s book is not the dispassionate examination and measured assessment of philosophical arguments typical of analytic philosophers. It is a polemical dissection and indictment of the perceived destructive aims and tactics of the left. Earlier chapters on Sartre and Foucault, and on members of the Frankfurt School, particularly Adorno, are the most engaging." ―Samuel Freeman, The New York Review of Books"Eminent British philosopher and polymath Scruton gives a sharp-edged, provocative critique of leading leftist thinkers since the mid-20th century . . . complex and erudite." ―Publishers Weekly"Caustic, highly recherché, and simply great fun to read for the questing intellectual soul." ―Kirkus Reviews"[H]onestly assesses the political and philosophical contributions of the Left [and] addresses what is likely our most pressing question: ‘Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith?'" ―Catholic World Report

As an undergraduate, I wondered why the curriculum in the humanities was so narrowly focused, and why some of these alleged-brilliant minds were not only convoluted in their theories, but sometimes deliberately obtuse/obscurantist in their writing. As I progressed to graduate school, things got even worse. The "mathemes" struck me as the Leftist's attempt to give their non-theories a kind of mathematical/scientific patina. The gibberish of "the sign and the signifiier," the incessant invocation of "the other," all of this stuff eventually became a bit wearing.Scrutton does a good job in this short work of separating the wheat from the chaff, in addressing the dominant intellectual schools of thought, and the thinkers who made their "institutional march," first through Europe, who are now well-entrenched in American universities. This book is not the paranoid hit piece that either the title nor the cover art would lead one to believe. Scruton gives credit where it is due, especially to Foucault and Sartre, whose conclusions and solutions may be off-base, but whose keenness of mind and command of history is pretty staggering. The ultimate picture that Scruton paints, however, is one that would be absurdly funny if so many people weren't hurt (literally and psychologically) by the unrelievedly nihilistic philosophies and theories perpetuated by the Frankfurt School, existentialists, Marxists, etc. All of the thinkers whose works and beliefs Scruton details have several features in common: they believe in the sanctity of some abstract "worker" or proletariat, despite having little or no daily interaction with their subjects, and they believe that the Left can never be held accountable for the catastrophic gulf between theory and praxis (especially regarding Marxism and Communism), and above all, they believe that people who don't believe what they believe are not merely viewing things from a different perspective, but are wrong, and either need to be ignored or somehow eliminated from the discourse. The works that Scruton engages are many times pretentious, and, once parsed for content, revealed to be empty shell games. Naturally then, when Scruton critiques the works, he himself has to "wade in the mud" so to speak, so sometimes the reading is itself a chore. But it was a necessary public service Scruton performed in this book, and his sense of humor helps leaven what would otherwise be a punishing wade through the mire. And if you're going to college and you're going to accrue debt and a plethora of nihilistic, useless gibberish as well, you owe it to yourself to read this book and inoculate yourself. Or, if you've already been through the ringer, his book will reassure you that no, you are not alone, and that yes, Bertrand Russell was right: "Man is born ignorant, not stupid. He is made stupid through education." Recommended.

The title is misleading, because it is the most ad hominem part of the book. Scruton calls no one here a 'fool,' in fact here he is paying Foucault a compliment:It is as difficult to do justice to the achievements of Foucault as it is to those of Sartre. His imagination and intellectual fluency have generated theories, concepts and insights by the score, and the synthesizing poetry of his style rises above the murky sludge of left-wing writing like an eagle over mud-flats. Moreover, this flamboyant adoption of the higher vision is a large part of Foucault’s appeal. He is unable to encounter opposition without at once rising, under the impulse of his intellectual energy, to the superior ‘theoretical’ perspective, from which opposition is seen in terms of the interests that are advanced by it. Opposition relativized is also opposition discounted. It is not what you say, but that you say it, that awakens Foucault’s interest. ‘D’où parles-tu?’ is his question, and his stance remains beyond the reach of every answer.Considering how much ground is covered, I think it is a compliment to say the book seemed much shorter than 300 pp. It also seemed up-to-date, although part of it (I'm not sure how much in all) was written in the 1980s. In part, this book is a lament that every faddish new philosophy coming out of Paris is the same old story. The 'critique' is always of capitalism, and the failure of socialism never means abandoning 'leftist values.'Quote:... But the attempt to achieve a social order without domination inevitably leads to a new kind of domination, more sinister by far than the one deposed. The seeds of the new structure of power are present in the organization necessary for the violent overthrow of the old, for, as Andrew Marvell said of Cromwell: . . . those arts that did gain A power must it maintain.A study of the logic of ‘revolutionary praxis’ confirms the celebrated observation of Roberto Michels, that an ‘iron law of oligarchy’ constrains all revolutionary parties towards the opposite of their emancipatory goal. It is a century since Michels – himself a radical socialist – expressed those thoughts, and no socialist has ever bothered to answer him, even though history has confirmed his conclusion at every point. If the book gets off to a slow start, and devotes too much space to some 'thinkers' and less to others, it is nonetheless a trenchant, if depressing look at how the academic left insulates itself from reality and logic. I honestly got a chill toward the end, because I feel the winds of Deleuze et al blowing stronger in the USA today.

This book is essential for those who want two things: (1) a critical overview of new left thinking and (2) specific well-explained reasons why new left thinking is logically untenable and/or a smorgasbord of inanities and platitudes - or in some cases, no more than an intellectual prank. (Lacan, Deleuze and often Foucault with his 'histories'). Scruton does an excellent job in pointing out key difficulties in their work, and in clearly explaining why - in one way or another - the nature and extent of their flaws. I especially like his blunt spoken ways i.e. no weasel words, that so often mar philosophical books by academics. What makes this book especially important is that so many of these non-sensical ideas have trickled down the street level, especially to students who adopt them with a great deal of passion but very little understanding and/or life-experience. Scruton's book is a perfect antidote against such neocortical poison because it effectively combines background knowledge with incisive analysis. If I were still teaching, I would use this book in my classroom.

3 stars for a decent love story. -2 stars for Ms. Grant forcing her view of feminism down my throat in the guise of the character’s thoughts. If I wanted to hear about social issues I’d turn on a 24-hour news channel. However, I avoid them like the plague and for good reason. They’re exhausting. The women power narrative pulled me out of the book at least 3 times. The Hero and Heroine both espoused it and I was so sick of their yammering about that and NOT their want/love/need for each other...because it’s a romance novel, right?...that I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room.I would absolutely hate to break up with Pippa Grant because she’s a great writer and so, so funny. But I will because listening to some fantasy character preaching at me is not something I would ever consider fun. The book is even set in a made up land called Amoria and I still can’t escape the political insanity of America. Dear authors, please stop this. You’re ruining your books and breaking my heart.

We're getting enough characters in these interconnected stand alones that we may need a flow chart, but I’ll try to keep it simple. This book is Peach and Viktor's story and includes Peach's sister, Papaya, and their Meemaw. Peach is best friends and business partners with Joey (Joey and Zeus from The Pilot and the Puck-Up) and Viktor is head bodyguard for royal hockey player Manning (Gracie and Manning from Royally Pucked). To obtain legal custody of her sister, the Alabama judge orders Peach to get married, and yes, I’ve seen judges here in the south make some pretty crazy rulings, so that’s not too far fetched. Viktor has the opportunity to be king of the country from which his grandfather was dethroned, but Amoria law requires their king have a wife. Peach and Viktor may get on each other's last nerve, but they can be a solution for each other and keep things strictly business. You can likely already see how well that will work out. This author is an auto preorder and auto “get my hands on an advance copy" so the scales may be tipped in favor of me viewing her work in a positive light, but it’s because she’s truly a fantastic writer. If a queen of romantic comedy were being crowned, I'd be hard pressed to not plop the tiara firmly on Grant's witty, humorous head. Every new book is better than the last, and I’m in awe of her ability to continue to create such delightfully entertaining stories. No one does antics, shenanigans and comedic errors quite like this author, from legwarmers for llamas and charming crumbling castles to purloined hot air balloons and everything coming up, well, hearts, there’s never a dull moment.Of course, these characters are just as endearing as the others have been and quickly find their way into the reader's heart. (Seriously, there are a lot of hearts!) I loved Viktor's upper crust narration, and how he seemed all serious, stoic and kingly, but his compassion, huge heart, a sense of humor he kept closely guarded and his hint of vulnerability are what really made the character for me. And between Peach and her younger sister Papaya, never mind his kingly duties, Viktor really has his hands full. Papaya is a good-hearted, out of control teenager, and Peach has her own set of challenges. Moving from Alabama to the country of Amoria doesn’t really change any of that. “You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the girl" seems to be a motto ingrained in Peach and she's always had to work harder to make a success of things. It also doesn't help that she had a lesson in trusting men when she was fifteen, and she's believed that all men are untrustworthy ever since. She's her own worst enemy because it keeps her from seeing the good in her or the good things she has accomplished. It’s always an adventure to read a Grant book, and this is no exception. I never know where the journey will take me, but I know it will be great fun. These characters are complex and immensely endearing. The storyline is engaging and entertaining, and I was right there with Peach and Viktor, page by page, pulling for their happily ever after. With an abundance of non-food-or-beverage-consuming, laugh-out-loud moments, the perfect amount of kingly and sassy southern hotness, and a ton of happy-sigh inducing heart, this book is royally worthy of a 1-Click!*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.

3.5 StarsHot Heir. An enemies to lovers/marriage of convenience story. This was not my favorite book in this series.I’ve really liked this series. While all of the books are hilarious with slightly over the top shenanigans, this book just went a bit too far for me.I liked Peach in Joey and Gracie’s books (The Pilot and the Puck-Up and Royally Pucked). She was a great friend to both of them, loyal and protective. She’s brash, mouthy, and throws out southern phrases like the down home woman she is. And the small parts she had in those books was perfect. A whole book of Peach’s angry snark, and that boulder sized chip she carries on her shoulder was just too much. I did like her better towards the end of the book when she finally let her guard down and came out from behind her walls.Peach’s sister. I have no words. Talk about so far over the top. She was almost ridiculous. I understand Peach wanting better for her sister than she had, but this child should have been arrested several times over, not have her antics covered up by Peach. She needed to turn the tough love on her way sooner than she did.Viktor I loved. He and Peach both stepped up for their families. By them marrying, they both were able to hold on to what was important. Even if it meant spending time with Peach. He had the patience of a saint when it came to Peach, her sister and her Meemaw. Not to mention taking on the crown of a country that’s been run into the ground. But he did it, without complaint. And with the help of his younger brother Alexander, who I loved.Overall it wasn’t a bad book, just a bit too much of everything. It was laugh out loud funny in spots. And it does have a happy ending.

I have been a fan of Pippa Grant since her first book. She writes seriously laugh-out-loud, riotous romance novels. You have to suspend belief and embrace the unexpected when you read her books, and this one is no different. But you are always rewarded with a romantic romp like no other.Peach and Viktor - I didn’t know what to expect from the combination of these two supporting characters, but like I said, expect the unexpected from a Pippa Grant novel. This was a book that was full of heart, intelligence and good fun. Reading Peach and Viktor’s transition from foes to supporters to lovers is rewarding, as are the scenes with their extended family. One word of caution - if you read this in bed at night, you may laugh so hard you wake your spouse. I speak from experience.

I can't finish this. Got 3/4 of the way, but I'm done. What a bunch of hateful characters. If anyone treated me the way Nicole treats Claire, I'd bitch slap her. Way too over-the-top for me. Real people don't behave like this.

I hated this. If I could return it, I would. This should not be the second book. I read what is supposed to be the first book but based on the story all of this has happened prior to the book I just read. I wish I could get my money back. The characters are very mean. They are not likable whatsoever. I have read lots of Susan Mallery and love reading multi-book stores. But this one is a trainwreck.

Simply put, this is a thoroughly delightful story of family, meeting challenges, and falling in love. From start to finish, the reader falls in love with the characters flaws and all and roots for a happily ever after for the main character. Once again, Ms. Gallery does not disappoint.

As long as you aren't too annoyed by the common romance trope of instant overwhelming attraction, this is an enjoyable read, with main characters you can like and respect, and with Susan Mallery's usual sprinkling of witty dialogue. I'm about to read the second book in this series.

Poor Claire torn from her family, namely her twin sister to study and play piano. Blamed by her twin for their mother's death. Told to go away when she goes to help her twin after surgery.

How does Susan Mallery do it? At times I was so angry with Nicole and Claire I was ready to throw the book away and within minutes I was in love with them. Such realistic characters WITH a believable storyline it was hard to do anything but read. Can't wait for book 2.

I finished this in one sitting! Great characters, snappy dialogue and a funny realistic happily ever after. Can't wait to start the next in this series.

I am new to susan mallery and the genre, i loved her fools gold series, and the Maricelli sisters (except the last one). this book was disappointing as I could not find one redeeming quality in the male character Wyatt. at the end i just wished the main character left him and found someone more worthy of her. If she had been my friend I would have told her she was settling or was letting an orgasm decide the next 50 years of her life. is there such a thing as Orgasm goggles? Nicole and Jesse are so flawed and unlikeable, but i am curious as to how ms mallery will endear these sisters to me, so I will read the other two.
