IThis is a book about educated progressive women, who were forced by the times they lived in, to exist on the sidelines of political and moral change. It also shows how the women, many of whom were married, coped with this treatment and then began to overcome it. . I did have a personal reason to select it as Abigail Cranch Eliot is a great great grandmother. But independent of that it is an interesting book about women as a social force, the Unitarian religion, and change in America.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in liberal religion and specifically the role wives and daughters of ministers have played over the generations. The women were agents of change not only for themselves, but their churches, secular communities, and eventually the world. Part of the story is how women saw themselves, their accomplishments, and the world around them.As an Eliot descendant there were things that were confirmed, surprises,and recollections that I enjoyed reading. This book is more than a family history, however, and should enjoy greater readership.
Fascinating, well written, and engaging stories about some of the matriarchs of Unitarianism. A must read for all Unitarian Universalists, and fun too!
Terrible book. My teacher made the class buy the book to read. Its just really horrible. A lot of inconsistencies.
