I've been using the HTML Visual QuickStart Guide since 2nd Edition. I skipped the 7th edition because at the time I felt that the technologies added were too playground-ish to use in production for a web site that was not a web app. Also, I'm kind of loyal to Liz Castro and the updates from 6th Edition onward aren't hers and the style is definitely different in ways that felt out of place. What's changed is that as of this point in time, HTML 5 is no longer really a stubborn rejection of W3C's stagnant attempts at standardization. It IS a standard all its own now, with basically universal support in modern browsers, and it degrades properly, which cannot really be said of the now abandoned "future of the web" W3C was pushing for.In short, HTML 5 won, W3C lost, the clunky explanation of the standards war and the push to XMLify the web is gone, and Liz has moved on to focus on the world of digital publishing with her excellent [ASIN:0321734688 EPub Straight to the Point] (which I highly recommend BTW). Bruce Hyslop is now at the helm of this title, and by this edition he's updated enough of the book at this point that it no longer feels like a messy patch…developers, you know what I mean. And Bruce is a highly competent and accomplished author in his own right who knows his material and presents it well. It's still the best book of its type on the market bar none, even if I would truly rate it only 4.75 stars instead of 5 if I could. ;)And what type of book is it? Well, if you're just looking for a few tips on how to use some software to get a page on the web, this isn't your book. If you're looking for a guide to writing web apps, this isn't your book. If you haven't a clue what a web page is or how it works, this probably isn't your book. If you basically understand what a web page is, that it consists of content marked up with tags that have their own meaning irrespective of how they look on the screen, that there's a whole separate language for defining what those tags look like, and you're really just looking for a guide to show you how to use the various tags and markup to accomplish the goals you've set out for yourself… THIS IS YOUR BOOK.It's your book if you intend to become a web developer as a regular thing, and it's your book if you have other duties but find yourself needing to include some web development/publishing amongst them. Its purpose is to get you comfortable with the code—the building blocks that make make up your pages. What you do with them from there is entirely up to you. From there, even if you ultimately decide to use some framework written in PHP, Ruby, or Python, or if you start designing your own framework… you'll have the tools to understand the HTML and CSS portion of it, and just enough of the Javascript to make those work. All of those other technologies… they're other books unto themselves.Ultimately if you want to just do a thing on the web, you can find another way than reading this book. But if you want to understand what you're doing as you do it, this is the book to do it. And it has been for at least 17 years now.

I have been buying Elizabeth Castro's books on HTML ever since she started. This book is a wonderful new edition and a step up from anyone who is familiar with good old HTML4 - but needs to bring their skills up to modern day. Also or for anyone wishing to learn HTML from the bottom up. Elizabeth's books are so clearly laid out with examples, and highlighted text, they are always a pleasure to read, and or utilize as a reference. The book also comes with a free eBook copy and other wonderful online support features. You simply cannot do better than using this book for learning HTML (& CSS). (Works terrific with free Alleycode HTML editor, and or other text editors such as Notepadd++.

I needed this for my most recent semester in college and I'm so glad that I bought it. I love that it provided you a site where you could download the examples in the book and try them out as I read along. If it were not for this book I doubt I would have been able to pass my class with an A+. This book not only provided examples but also step by step instructions so I knew what I was doing and what the code actually did as I built the examples. If you are a beginner, novice, or just need a refresher this book is for you! I highly recommend it and I'm very selective about books I recommend.

I have two of her earlier editions that are well worn because they are that useful. After looking through this edition I'm impressed with the improvements. Better page layouts and much better graphics. As close as you can get to a one stop shop for HTML/CSS as I've found.

Highly recommend for anyone learning HTML and CSS. I knew nothing about CSS and only a little about HTML, but I needed to learn both quickly for an online class I was taking. I couldn't have done it without this book.

Every section includes a keystroke-by-keystroke rundown of how to build your code right. Illustrations everywhere, and plenty of best-practice suggestions to ensure clean secure code and search engine optimization (SEO). Beginners and first-timers will love this book; more experienced coders will find some nuggets as well.

I think this is only the 3rd time I've rated a book '5 stars'. He writes so beautifully one can nearly hear, smell, and taste the adventure.

The Drums of Kathmandu is a terrific follow-up to the author’s first travel memoir, Alone in the Wind, which recounts a motorcycle trip across America. Mr. Schiereck again takes us back in time, this time to 1990, and then hundreds of years still further back in time, as his travels through the Far East unfold.The story is amusing, informative, and incredibly poignant. But rather than clinging to the side of some jagged cliff, the story is peppered with laugh-out-loud anecdotes regarding the latest meal cooked up by the team’s chef, and the mechanical ingenuity and gyrations necessary to keep their transport vehicle moving. And yet, scenes of incredible beauty are brought to life by Mr. Schiereck, who has an eye for seeing, in the simplest things, that which joins us all together in humanity.If you’re looking to read about someone conquering Everest, this may not be your story. But if you’d like to experience, firsthand, a slice of life you’ll likely never see but are curious to understand, this look at late 20th century Nepal, before tourism took hold and spoiled it, or at least changed it forever, this book may be your ticket. Bravo!

The way this book was written was so descriptive you felt u had your own pack on ur back and took the journey with them.

A fine story of adventure. Many parts of the reflections and feelings seemed written by the hand of, or in the true spirit of, Hemingway."There have been moments in my life when magic seeps from the ground, and I get to bear witness to sights dredged up from the depths of time.""Silent, we stood together lost in our reelections, thoughts that I never shared."Written with realism, and candidness, Chuck tells a fine story of a sought out location, it's struggles, and cultural aspects in a far away land that very few of will get to experience. An enjoyable read, at any time.

The Drums of Kathmandu is a terrific read. You actually feel as if you are along for the journey, experiencing, feeling and tasting every detail of his unique trek through the villages, the valleys and mountain passes of Nepal. Mr. Schiereck has an uncanny ability to bring to verbal reality his innermost thoughts. (("Still, sometimes its better if the road ends with a little unsolved mystery") There is a plethora of such philosophical observations. I particularly liked the way he describes the native Nepalese characters, as he highlights their motivational resolve to please, while staying relatively positive despite the coutry's political disasters and poverty stricken population. There is, no doubt a thread of sadness throughout the story. It is this sadness that should make one reflect. It is truly beyond belief how much we take for granted. Perhaps such a trek as taken by the author and his friend should be mandatory for a true life lesson of gratitude. Thanks for sharing your experience, Mr Schiereck.

Loved it! This is one man's journalistic writings of a time captured while traveling in a country most of us will never see, but we have all heard about at one time or another. Historically informative, his narrative drew me in and I felt like I was walking ( or "trekking" ) alongside of him. The numerous photographs enhanced the reading material and further drew me in to the story. I also appreciated the Appendix Notes that gave further testimony, resources and information relevant to Kathmandu, Nepal. In reading this book, I learned things I never knew about a country, it's culture and it's people. A good read!

A truly great read. Through his writing and photography Schiereck has captured what it was like to travel in a place seemingly frozen in time. While reading it I really felt a sense of what it was like to be there. The quotes at the chapter beginnings and all the historical references were great elements that added a lot of perspective. I do not know anyone that does not love THUMPER! If you have a friend who is a rabbit he must know Thumper. He is the friend in the forest that helps others but sometimes needs advice and help from others. We all have a little Thumper in us, sometimes a little excited and can't stop tapping the foot, sometimes speaking out of turn, sometimes jumping in too soon. Thumper is present in most of us but teaches us to learn to slow down and listen to what is going on around us. It's about being a good friend and making our way. Great story book and so many stories. Thumper can be a best friend when we feel alone!

It is cute. Artwork is adorable. Easy read. But my disappointment is that I thought I would be more of an easter story. It has nothing to do with easter.

Thumper Finds an Egg is such a cute Easter book and it's just perfect to put in the Easter basket.I put it in an Easter basket that went to a Children's Hospital and the book was loved.I would recommand it for any child.

Given to young cousins for Easter. They love this book!

Oh, this book is out of this world! The pages are so colorful and the children can learn about different animals from it too!

Seidel was our required textbook for Medical Practice at my medical school, but after having experienced baby Bates in undergrad, decided to purchase this one instead. So glad I did, because the physical exam sections are set up so that if a patient has any abnormal signs or answers to questions, Bates gives you guidelines about differential diagnoses right next to the question, doing a lot of the inductive reasoning for you. I think Bates' pictures are better than Seidel's as well. Would purchase again, and have recommended it to my classmates.

I purchased this textbook brand new only due to the inclusion of the access code for online content. In every other text I've had with online access, there is an electronic copy of the textbook and then varying amounts of other student resources (e.g., review questions, assessment videos, etc.). Be forewarned! This book does NOT include an electronic copy of the text!!! With the access code, the student only gets chapter review questions, heart and breath sounds, and some assessment stuff like skill checklists and guidelines. I emailed the publishing company to inquire about this, but they did not respond. I am very disappointed because I needed the e-text in addition to the hard copy. I am not at all happy to learn I could have paid half or less for this textbook if I had not "needed" the new copy with the "access" code.

This book literally fell apart as I opened it for the first time. The back cover states “activate your ebook” but gives no further instruction. The website provided on the inside cover has no resources for an ebook.

Although you may be required to purchase for a course, be VERY CAREFUL with it. The content itself is good, but the quality of the manufacturing is absolute garbage. My book had many instances where the pages were not cut from printing and in cutting them they turned out jagged and crumpled. My book only had a few pages fall out, but 3 other classmates had their entire books fall apart. They had to purchase plastic binders and bind their individual chapters together. They also had many pages missing, one girl had an entire chapter missing!

the binding on this book is awful. I ordered it ahead of time, and therefore didn't open it until my course started, at which point it was outside the return window. Within the first 2 days of using the books, pages started falling out and now half the book is loose with individual pages. I question if there is any glue in the binding at all. Additionally, the print is slightly blurred, suggesting cheap printing. I am not looking forward to referencing this book for the remainder of my summer semester. The material seems par for an assessment book, nothing outstanding. I have an older assessment book from a different author which is better organized and manufactured; I plan to use it instead as it has all the same information as Bates.

This book has many pages still fused together, like it has not been cut properly. I would estimate that one page per chapter is like this. I have had to rip the pages apart from one another. There are pages that are still attached by a small amount of paper, then some pages are completely fused. So frustrating. As for the content of the book, it is fine.

Easy to read lay out. Was thankful to have the E-Text and access to quizzes and exams that I needed for my online course. However, the access to videos that the rest of my online class received with their new textbook was NOT included in my new book bought from here. The videos would have really helped me with my head to toe assessment as watching them was apart of our homework assignment that I was not able to complete.

I use this book constantly for school. It is great for what i need it for and love that it has a TON of pictures and easy explanations.

I've always enjoyed watching the witty banter of these two ladies with the quirky Christopher Kimball on ATK and appreciated the "no-fail" researched recipes as a result of their hard work. I love to cook and bake but have a limited amount of time to shop and spend time in the kitchen. I need reliable recipes that will be worth the time. It's easy to get caught up in blogs, personalities, and the latest cookbook, but sometimes you just need a simple and tasty collection of recipes that will get you and your family through the week. I've done the taco recipe twice, the pesto meatball recipe once, and the pumpkin bread recipe once with much success.There are a TON of ATK books out there along with a MYRIAD of Cook's Illustrated monthly/seasonal periodicals, so it's easy to get overwhelmed. Stick with the hand-picked recipes of this book and you will be delighted.Suggestion: Retitle the book to "Old Ironsides"Thank you Bridget and Julia!

Nice book but no new recipes. All of these are in The America's Test Kitchen Cookbook.

This is one of the best cookbooks ever...for me. It's full of recipes useful for everyday or for company. I love the fact that many of the recipes could be made easily from items readily on hand.

A wonderful cookbook from Bridget and Julia of Americas Test Kitchen. Tried and true recipes, come out delicious and look so nice. Love the personal touches in the book too.

This is a beautiful cookbook...beautiful photos and absolutely lovely and practical recipes that I am looking forward to making. One thing I cannot figure out, though, is "meatloaf mix." I want to make the "Pasta with Classic Bolognese" and it calls for 12 ounces of "meatloaf mix." I have never heard of this and there is nothing I can find in the cookbook that says what it is. I am sure I will get it figured out, but it is a bit frustrating. I don't want this to take away from the cookbook though, it is gorgeous and I wouldn't hesitate to give it as a gift.

Just received and made 2 recipes that were delicious! Great selection, you will be using this book all the time!

So, I am a few recipes into the book. I will say that the book has some minor steps missing from some of the recipes. If you are not a seasoned chef, this is not the book for you. These recipes are for people with a history of cooking or baking and with more than just basic knowledge of food prep and cooking. I love the ladies and and I love the recipes, but please just know that I have been cooking and baking for 40 years and I still had questions. Try and review the book first at your local library before you purchase.

Love when these two ladies bake together. They give such great hints and make some difficult things easy. I read the book the first day I got it and marked all the recipes I was going to make.

However, force was not enough. Instead, Israel needed to stop the flow of money which nourished the terror networks. This effort was spear-headed by Meir Dagan, who created a task force code-named “Harpoon,” which coordinated efforts to end the financing of terror. Dagan was later appointed head of the Mossad, Israel’s CIA.Once Israel made the strategic decision to chase the money, it used a variety of tactics and tricks. Money was often seized by government order. However, Israel also used various clever stratagems to retrieve money from off the grid, and these stories comprise some of the most fascinating vignettes in the book.Harpoon shatters the myth that the suicide bomber is the poor-man’s cruise missile. Banks became afraid to transfer money because the risk of expensive litigation outweighed the possible fees which could be obtained. Bringing cash into Gaza and the Palestinian Authority was both difficult and expensive, reducing financial support for terror.The United States has also learned to suffocate the funds that are the lifeblood of terrorist organizations. For example, the CIA targeted Iranian banks by pressuring SWIFT, the network used by international banks to transfer money, to prevent the Islamic Republic from using SWIFT for financial transfers. In 2016, U.S. Army Special Forces targeted and killed ISIS’s finance minister in a daring helicopter raid. Excellent read about how a new front against terror made a huge impact. Intrigue and excitement enhanced by the fact that the book revolves around true stories; many that never really made it into the news.For anyone remotely interested in this topic - this book is a total must read.

The impressive approach of lawyer Nitsana Darshan-Leitner to sue organizations like the PLO, money centers like the Lebanon Canada Bank, and even countries that aid, abed, and fund terrorists has certainly had a huge impact on protecting the world from evil. In her non-fiction book, which sometimes reads like a spy novel, she explains how she has gone after the bad guys, often with the help of intelligence services around the world – especially in Israel – to cripple the infrastructure of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. One of the side results of her work, unfortunately, has been the extreme tightening of regulations relating to money transfers around the world. With all the added government rules, it’s often hard for good people to move money for legitimate purposes. Much like the TSA pats down millions of innocent people every year in order to protect travelers from a few malicious extremists, the banks must examine every money movement in order to catch the few that will fund terror organizations. As a financial advisor, I spend a great deal of time dealing with these anti-money laundering controls. The terrorists have made their murderous actions extend well beyond the one-time havoc that they caused and literally changed the way we live our lives and handle our money. Darshan-Leitner’s book is a great exposé of the extent of the damage they have caused and of how she has been leading the courtroom fight against them. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to participate in the conversation about how to fight Islamic terror.

This book is a must read for anyone following the war on terror. Stopping the financing of terror attacks is complex and far reaching; I certainly did not know about the large Lebanese population in Venezuala facilitating major drug trafficking through Damascus to Lebanon and then to Europe. Western African countries have played a major part in laundering the money. Major banks and their US correspondents turned a blind eye until taken to court. It expanded my understanding of the threat we face as it chronicles the hard choices being made by extremely brave and resourceful people. I cant recommend this book enough.

A fascinating glance inside the battle of good versus evil. Along with the fascinating story the authors are fantastic writers. Additionally, the characters involved in executing Harpoon's mission were inspirational.

Fantastic story movingly told. It was a great read but I kept wondering why it was being told ... making one-time classified information easily available does not seem necessary or appropriate ... and maybe that partially explains why it was such a good read.
