THE CLINICAL PRACTICE OF CHINESE MEDICINE

from the author's site:

"This work explicates how to achieve the core value system at the heart of Nourishing Destiny in clinical practice. All treatment paradigms are fully elaborated to allow immediate integration into the clinic. I cover in detail the points on the 12 main channels cross referencing every character in every main and alternate point name to Weiger's etymological text and to Mathews' Chinese-English dictionary. I also fully elaborate the Worsley five-element tradition with a fresh perspective for the twenty first century. A chapter on Clearing Blocks with Chinese Herbs contains a beautifully written piece by Thea Elijah on treating possession, exit/entry blocks, and clearing the sensory orifices with herbal medicine. A 60 page chapter discusses the in depth use of the five element points on each channel with an eye toward engendering the integral consciousness that lies at the heart of Chinese medicine. In conclusion I examine the four thousand year history of Chinese Medicine from the perspective of Spiral Dynamics, a model that yields deep insight into the evolution of consciousness. I examine where Chinese medicine has been, where it is, and where it needs to go if it is to fulfill its potential as a leading edge wholistic/integral medicine."

from the forward:

"Lonny Jarrett has written another book in his unmistakable style. This work must be read as the autobiography of a master practitioner who shows us his roots, his growth process, and the amalgamation of Chinese medicine with everything he is, thinks, and knows--all in the spirit of inspiring the same." - Heiner Fruehauf, Chair, Dept of Classical Chinese Medicine, NCNM

Wow. What a lovely book! I am so taken with the exquisite descriptions of the more spiritual dimensions of TCM clinical practice. I am so sad that much acupunture is rote and so entangled with justifying itself with western medicine. Forget that path. What is lacking is the beauty and nuances of treating the spiritual dimensions of suffering. Since all life is rooted in shock and suffering, why not connect with that level in your life and practice? No words to express the beauty of this offering! This is the foundation I have been looking for in my medical qi gong practice. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Great book with some amazing treatments! Much easier to read than nourishing destiny. I rally like the aggressive energy, husband/wife imbalance and akabane treatments. Large section on the meaning of each point on the meridians.

Join the revolution! Jarrett's first book, "Nourishing Destiny" laid out the theory of Chinese medicine for the 21st Century. His latest book "The Clinical Practice of Chinese Medicine", brings the concept into the clinc. This book gives a fresh new look at practicing Chinese medicine. I have never read a clinial text with so much depth. On the cutting edge, Jarrett's book will challenge you to take your practice to a deeper level. This book is what Chinese medicine is all about!!Key Points: I found the Clinic protocol on various techniques invaluable. As a TCM practicioner I wanted to balance my practice with Five Element techniques. Jarrett's book helps you incorporate the Five Element techniques into your TCM practice.I also appreciate how deeply Jarrett looks into things. A truely revolutionary work!!!

The Alphabet In circa 2000 BC, the Egyptian pharaohs realized they had a problem. With each military victory over their neighbors, they captured and enslaved more prisoners of war. But the Egyptians could not pass down written orders to these slaves as they could not read hieroglyphics.Early writing systems, such as Egyptian hieroglyphics, were extremely cumbersome and difficult to learn. These systems had thousands of characters, with each symbol representing an idea or word. Memorizing them could take years. Only a handful of Egyptians could actually read and write their complicated script.Linguists believe that almost all modern alphabets are derived from the simplified version of hieroglyphics devised by the Egyptians four thousand years ago to communicate with their slaves. The development of an alphabet, the writing system used throughout the Western world, changed the way the ancients communicated. In the simplified version, each character represented only a sound. This innovation cut back the number of characters from a few thousand to a few dozen, making it far easier to learn and use the characters. The complicated hieroglyphic language was eventually forgotten, and scholars were not able to translate the characters until the discovery of the Rosetta stone in 1799.The alphabet was extremely successful. When the Egyptian slaves eventually migrated back to their home countries, they took the writing system with them. The alphabet spread across the Near East, becoming the foundation for many writing systems in the area, including Hebrew and Arabic. The Phoenicians, an ancient civilization of seaborne traders, spread the alphabet to the tribes they encountered along the Mediterranean coast. The Greek and Roman alphabets, in turn, were based on the ancient Phoenician script. Today most Western languages, including English, use the Roman alphabet.Additional Facts 1. Several letters in modern-day English are direct descendents of ancient Egyptian characters. For instance, the letter B derives from the Egyptian character for the word house.2. The most recent edition of the Oxford English Dictionary contains 171,476 words in current usage, among the most of any language. Ulysses James Joyce's Ulysses (1922) is widely regarded as the greatest novel written in English in the twentieth century. It retells Homer's Odyssey in the context of a single day-June 16, 1904-in Dublin, Ireland, recasting Homer's great hero Odysseus in the unlikely guise of Leopold Bloom, an aging, cuckolded ad salesman who spends the day running errands and making various business appointments before he returns home at long last.Though Bloom seems unassuming and ordinary, he emerges as a heroic figure, displaying compassion, forgiveness, and generosity toward virtually everyone in the odd cast of characters he meets. In his mundane and often unnoticed deeds, he practices an everyday heroism that is perhaps the only heroism possible in the modern world. And despite the fact that he always feels like an outsider-he is a Jew in overwhelmingly Catholic Ireland-Bloom remains optimistic and dismisses his insecurities.Ulysses is celebrated for its incredibly rich portraits of characters, its mind-boggling array of allusions to other literary and cultural works, and its many innovations with language. Throughout the course of the novel, Joyce flirts with literary genres and forms ranging from drama to advertising copy to Old English. The novel is perhaps most famous for its extensive use of stream-of-consciousness narrative-Joyce's attempt to render the inner thoughts of his characters exactly as they occur, with no effort to impose order or organization. This technique became a hallmark of modernist literature and influenced countless other writers, such as Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner, who also experimented with it in their works. Not surprisingly, Ulysses poses a difficult journey for the reader, especially its famous last chapter, which recounts the thoughts of Bloom's wife, Molly. Molly's reverie goes on for more than 24,000 words yet is divided into only eight mammoth sentences. Despite the challenge it poses, the chapter shows Joyce at his most lyrical, especially in the final lines, which reaffirm Molly's love for her husband despite her infidelity:and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.Additional Fact 1. Ulysses was banned for obscenity in the United States for nearly twelve years because of its (mostly indirect) sexual imagery. Lascaux Cave Paintings The cave paintings at Lascaux are among the earliest known works of art. They were discovered in 1940 near the village of Montignac in central France when four boys stumbled into a cave. Inside they found a series of rooms with nearly 1,500 paintings of animals that were between 15,000 and 17,000 years old. There are several theories regarding the function of the paintings. A natural feature of the cave may have suggested the shape of an animal to a prehistoric observer who then added highlights to relay his vision to others. Since many of the paintings are located in inaccessible parts of the cave, they may have been used for magical practices. Possibly, prehistoric people believed that the act of drawing animals, especially with a high degree of accuracy, would bring the beasts under their control or increase their numbers in times of scarcity. The animals are outlined or portrayed in silhouette. They are often shown in what is called twisted perspective, that is, with their heads in profile but their horns facing front. Many of the images include dots, linear patterns, and other designs that may carry symbolic meaning. The most magnificent chamber of the cave, known as the Great Hall of the Bulls, contains a painted narrative. From left to right, the pictures depict the chase and capture of a bison herd.As soon as the paintings had been examined and identified as Paleolithic, the caves were opened to the public in 1948. By 1955, however, it became increasingly evident that exposure to as many as 1,200 visitors per day was taking its toll on the works inside. Although protective measures were taken, the site closed in 1963. In order to satisfy public demand, a life- sized replica of the cave was completed in 1983, only 200 meters from the original.Additional Facts 1. The cave painters were conscious of visual perspective; they painted figures high on the wall, styled so that they would not appear distorted to the viewer below.2. The only human figure depicted in the cave appears in the Shaft of the Dead Man. The fact that it is drawn more crudely than the animals suggests that they did not think it was endowed with magical properties. Cloning In 1997, a baby sheep named Dolly introduced the world to reproductive cloning. She was a clone because she and her mother shared the same nuclear DNA; in other words, their cells carried the same genetic material. They were like identical twins reared generations apart.Scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland created Dolly by a process called nuclear transfer. Taking the genetic material from an adult donor cell, they transferred it into an unfertilized egg whose genetic material had been removed. In Dolly's case, the donor cell came from the mammary gland of a six-year-old Finn Dorset ewe. The researchers then gave the egg an electric shock, and it began dividing into an embryo. One of the reasons Dolly's creation was so astounding was that it proved to the scientific community that a cell taken from a specialized part of the body could be used to create a whole new organism. Before Dolly, almost all scientists believed that once a cell became specialized it could only produce other specialized cells: A heart cell could only make heart cells, and a liver cell could only make liver cells. But Dolly was made entirely from a cell extracted from her mother's mammary gland, proving that specialized cells could be completely reprogrammed. In many ways, Dolly was not like her mother. For example, her telomeres were too short. Telomeres are thin strands of protein that cap off the ends of chromosomes, the structures that carry genes. Although no one is sure exactly what telomeres do, they seem to help protect and repair our cells. As we age, our telomeres get shorter and shorter. Dolly received her mother's six-year-old telomeres, so from birth, Dolly's telomeres were shorter than the average lamb her age. Although Dolly appeared to be mostly normal, she was put to sleep in 2004 at the age of six, after suffering from lung cancer and crippling arthritis. The average Finn Dorset sheep lives to age eleven or twelve.Additional Facts 1. Since 1997, cattle, mice, goats, and pigs have been successfully cloned using nuclear transfer.2. The success rate for cloning is very low in all species. Published studies report that about 1 percent of reconstructed embryos survive birth. But since unsuccessful attempts largely go unreported, the actual number might be much lower.3. Before she died, Dolly was the mother of six lambs, all bred the old- fashioned way.4. A group of Korean researchers claimed to have cloned a human embryo in 1998, but their experiment was terminated at the 4-cell stage, so there was no evidence of their success. The Basics Music is organized sound that can be replicated through imitation or notation. Music is distinct from noise in that the sounds of a door creaking open or fingernails on a blackboard are irregular and disorganized. The sound waves that map these noises are complex and cannot be heard as identifiable pitches. Some of the basic ways that we analyze musical sounds are:Pitch: How high or how low a sound is to the ear. Pitch is measured technically by the frequency of a sound wave, or how often waves repeat themselves. In western music there are twelve unique pitches (C, C-sharp or D-flat, D, D-sharp or E-flat, E, F, F-sharp or G-flat, G, G-sharp or A- flat, A, A-sharp or B-flat, and B). The pitches followed by sharps or flats are called accidentals, and they are most easily described as the black keys on the piano keyboard. They are located musically, one half step between the two pitches on either side of them. For example, D-sharp and E- flat have the same pitch. When referring to pitches in the context of notated, or written music, they are called notes.Scale: A stepwise arrangement of pitches (for example, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C) that often serves as the basis for a melody. A piece, or a portion of a piece, will often use only notes found in a particular scale. Western music primarily uses the major scale or the minor scale, in one form or another. To most people, the major scale, because of its particular arrangement of pitches, has the quality of sounding "bright," "happy," or "positive." A minor scale, likewise, is usually described as "dark," "sad," or "pessimistic."Key: An arrangement or system of pitches, usually based on one of the major or minor scales, that is meant to serve as a reference point and a guiding force of a melody. The tonic of a key is often the starting and ending point for a piece written in a particular key-so if a piece is in E major, then the pitch E will serve as the piece's tonal center.Additional Facts 1. All of these basic elements can be notated on the staff, which is a repeating set of five parallel horizontal lines. Often it is divided into measures to indicate metric divisions in the piece and marked at the beginning of each staff of the page with a clef to indicate reference points for identifying pitches.2. When a piece strays from its basic key, this is called modulation. Keys are indicated in written music by a key signature at the beginning of each staff.3. There are hundreds of scales used in the world's many different musical cultures. In India, music played on the sitar and other instruments chooses pitches from a collection of twenty-two possibilities, with the distances between scale steps sometimes larger and sometimes smaller than those used in Western music. This can make differences between pitches extremely subtle and demands a high virtuosity from Indian classical musicians. Appearance and Reality Throughout its history, one of the great themes of philosophy has been the distinction between appearance and reality. This distinction was central to the thought of the earliest philosophers, called the Presocratics, because they lived before Socrates. The Presocratics believed that the ultimate nature of reality was vastly different from the way it ordinarily appeared to them. For instance, one philosopher named Thales held that appearances notwithstanding, all reality was ultimately composed of water; Heraclitus thought the world was buitlt from fire. Further, Heraclitus maintained that everything was constantly in motion. Another thinker, Parmenides, insisted that nothing actually moved and that all apparent motion was an illusion. The Presocratics took seriously the possibility that all of reality was ultimately made up of some more fundamental substance. And they suspected that uncritical, everyday observation tends to present us with a misleading picture of the world. For these reasons, their thinking is often considered a precursor to modern science as well as philosophy. Many later philosophers-including Plato, Spinoza, and Leibniz-followed in this tradition and presented alternative models of reality, which they claimed were closer to the truth than ordinary, commonsense views of the world.Additional Facts 1. The distinction between appearance and reality is also central to the venerable philosophical tradition known as skepticism.2. Immanuel Kant also addressed the difference between appearance and reality. He distinguished between things we experience and what he called a "thing-in-itself." Torah The Torah is the name generally given to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, or the Five Books of Moses. Christians refer to these books as the Old Testament. The word Torah can also refer to the entire breadth of Jewish law encompassing several texts as well as oral traditions. The Five Books of Moses are the basis for the 613 laws that govern the Jewish faith, and they are the foundation for the world's three great monotheistic faiths-Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. They are as follows:Genesis: Tells the story of creation as well as the history of the Israelites, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their families Exodus: Recounts the exodus from Egypt to Canaan, including Moses receiving the Ten Commandments Leviticus: Contains the rules and practices of worship Numbers: Relates the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness Deuteronomy: Consists of speeches made by Moses at the end of his life that recount Israelite history and ethical teachingsThe five books are traditionally believed to have been given to Moses on Mount Sinai. Alternative theories claim the beginning of the Torah was given on Mount Sinai but that the revelation continued throughout Moses's life.

My ex-boyfriend stole my copy of this, and I liked it so much that I just bought another one.

If you are thinking of buying this book, you should know what you'll be getting. I learned a lot by reading this book, but I suspect that I also absorbed many errors. In MANY of the entries on topics that I already knew something about there were noticeable errors -- mostly minor, but mistakes nonetheless -- which makes me wonder how many errors I absorbed by reading the entries on topics with which I was less familiar. If you don't mind picking up some false information along the way, you may like this book. One other note: I purchased the paperback version, but the print was so small that I then purchased the Kindle edition (which allows you to adjust the font size) so that I could actually read it. So if you find reading really small font difficult, go with the Kindle edition.

I absolutely love these books, the 5 devotional books in this series. The range of information contained within is pretty diverse and each page is different than the previous or the one after, in terms of what I'd expect to see and read about. I have all 5 books now, and I'm really looking forward to reading and absorbing as much info as possible from them. The quality of these books is good, regardless of many of the negative reviews that address the subject. The pages are unevenly cut on the one side of the book, but the top and bottom of the books, the pages are cut evenly. This leads me to believe that the uneven cut of the pages on the side of the book is intentional. Reminds me of books from hundreds of years ago, the way the pages are unevenly cut. I find myself carrying one of these books around with me, for something to read when I only have time to read a page or two, to have something interesting and different to read each time. I really like these books, and I'd recommend them to anyone who has a hunger for knowledge, and/or someone who wants to read but has little time to do so because they lead a busy life. If I had to address anything about these books that would be a realistic critique without being overly critical, it'd be the size of the text. It's on the small side, but I personally have no difficulty reading it. Others may need to put on their reading glasses. Other than that, I see no reason to complain about any of the 'Intellectual Devotional' books. They're pretty great in my opinion. I definitely recommend.

I keep this book on my coffee table and when I'm bored and about to browse on my phone, I'll read one page- it does a great job summarizing a topic or subject and get me thinking. Such a simple book and idea that stimulates thoughtful learning while educating!

Remember that movie "Good Will Hunting" ? In the bar up at Harvard, Matt Damon totally destroys the arrogant undergrad in a battle of history. What a scene eh? Well, by the end of this book, you'll be on a par with the undergrad, so don't pick any intellectual arguments in bars. That's my warning.365 insights into historical events and people who shape or add to the tapestry that is the United states. Great conversation starters or, should someone mention a historical figure you will at least be able to say "Oh yeah, the guy who wrote the National Anthem right?"If you read one page a day, one year later you will probably have learned a few things you didn't already know. Also, these pages serve as good triggers, if your intellect is aroused, into further research.I enjoyed reading the pages, they are concise, and highlight the element(s) of the person that has them suspended in history.Well worth your time.

My friend recommended this book to me because I was talking to him about how I wanted to learn more about "general knowledge" but didn't want to read a huge textbook. He said that he had found this book in the bookstore and the premise is that you read 1 page a day and it will teach you about different areas of knowledge from the arts to the sciences to literature. I bought the book about 3 months ago and have been reading 1 page a night. It's amazing how knowledge you can gain from just reading 1 page a night. It's been great because if I come across something that I want to learn more about since 1 page really is not a lot, I just research it further on the web. Overall, a great book and I will purchase the rest of the series because I have also told myself that I should learn more about American History. Well, lo and behold, there's an Intellectual Devotional book devoted solely on American History!

I really like this book, fun to take to kids sporting events as you don't get immersed in a whole chapter. One page at a time. Plus gives a really nice story with how each one fits together overall. I had checked this book out at the local library, and purchased it to have in my own collection.

If you want to broaden your knowledge base on all types of topics, this is it. The days are quick and easy to read and I can bet the first 30 days you will learn at least 3 new things that you didn't know. My mom gave me this in the hardback form but I also purchased the kindle format so I could change the font size. I have given numerous copies as gifts to my nerdy friends and they all have loved it.

This story is unbelievably good. No, seriously starting it I had no idea how good it was. The beings in this are fantastical yet real. This is a story that need to be read.

Note that reviews for all editions of this book seem to be combined, so it's a bit confusing to get the right one! I ordered the hardcover thinking that it was the beautiful edition everyone raves about in their reviews, but the cover looks like it was printed on a home computer...turns out I bought some library/school version. Apparently, if you want the good hardcover edition, you have to buy the Saga BOOK 1 (not Vol. 1) in hardcover edition. Hopefully my review can save a few people the hassle of returning!

I was skeptical going into this, there's no way this "Saga" thing could be as great as they all say. I mean whats with the horns and stuff?Safe to say I was completely and utterly wrong, and I'm so glad I was. This series is amazing!! Everything they say about it is true! Hands down the best 18 issues of a comic book I've read in a long time. You will find yourself instantly captured by the characters and their struggles. The world is crazy but somehow not so crazy that it doesn't make sense, the art is immaculate and you never feel like the creators have wasted any panel in telling their story.Often comic books don't have their characters change or develop but every issue of Saga something of note happens, and that is extremely refreshing. I feel I've gotten more story in these 18 issues than I have in hundreds of issues of superhero comics. If you:1) are bored of superhero stories2) love space fantasy like Star Wars3) are looking for high quality art and storytellingthen this book is for you!Do yourself a favor and read it. Trust me.

I see buzz on Twitter about the Saga comic series when it wins awards – and each collected graphic novel volume seems to win several apiece. It sometimes feels like a year-round buzz cycle (in fact, the only comic my feed loves more is Ms. Marvel. which, for the record, I also enjoyed). It was inevitable that I’d finally take a look, especially when I realized that there was good female representation and the premise was “journey in space.” I picked up Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples after I saw a great deal in the Book Riot email list, so I now know what all the fuss is about.Brian K. Vaughan has created an adult comic (I feel like I have to clarify that it’s adult, because YA is my default expectation for this space) for fans of science fiction, star-crossed love and action adventure. The first volume has a lot going on: birth, death, berserker rages, interspecies conflict, a sex planet, ghosts, crazy spaceships, and a life-changing romance novel (that bit made me laugh)(in a good way). This comic does a lot of things well: multiple threads of story tied into the main plot line via an unusual omniscient narrator, exciting visuals, star-crossed love just fighting to survive, and humorous dialogue throughout. It is also a set-up for a wide-ranging epic, but the volume has enough skirmishes, close calls, and surprises to make it satisfying and interesting as a standalone. That said, I was not impressed by main heroine Alana’s dialogue. Whether it fits the character in the context of the series or not, I can’t say. I was just disappointed to read pages of the jealous/nagging wife cliché when there were other more interesting (and life-threatening!) things going on at the same time. So that bit into my enjoyment – and I am going to skip reading further volumes. The one plot thread that really got its hooks into me was that of the Robot Prince – I thought the robot royal characters seemed really innovative and suited to the comics medium. If you’ve been thinking you’d like to “try” comics, like science fiction, and don’t care for superheroes, Saga is a good place to start. Just be aware that this first volume pulls no punches – it’s R-rated. And if you’re more of a fantasy fan, I’d suggest starting out with Bill Willingham’s Fables.Recommended for: comics newbies and veterans alike – basically anyone interested in a complex space adventure with enough action to keep the story moving and enough depth to hook most readers for the long haul.

This is the third comic book series that I've decided to collect books on, and it's the best one in my opinion. What I really find interesting is that the story starts right during the birth of Alana and Marco's daughter. But there are occasional flashbacks to see how they met later in the story. The plot is really good, and there are many lovable characters along the way. Another interesting thing about the series is that the dialogue can range from casual to formal. Izabel and Prince Robot are great examples of this. This series has a mix of many genres: science fiction, fantasy, and romance. There are also some chapters that I'd say can be labeled under "slice of life." The violence is pretty graphic, showing gore and the severing of limbs. And there's some occasional nudity. At times it's used for comic relief, and at times it's used as a plot device. The art style is amazing. Book 1, in particular, was a blast to read. I enjoyed every page of it.Overall, I can say that this is my favorite comic book series of all time. I'm so glad I have this in a hardcover (which came with library binding)!

Moral Issues in Business

Review

"Business ethics textbooks tend to either be too business oriented without enough reflection, or too reflective without practical relevance. This book gets the balance right, and does it consistently throughout each of the chapters. I like it because all the material seems relevant and of interest to me personally.""MORAL ISSUES IN BUSINESS is an introductory text in business ethics written in a clear and engaging style for an undergraduate audience. After surveying basic issues in normative ethics and American business, the text focuses on key ethical issues faced by consumers, employees, and employers in manner that encourages open debate and critical reflection."

This was the required textbook for my Business Ethics class. This textbook is great! Very informative with lots of depth/research into general ethics. It then applies these theories to business with examples. It starts each chapter with a real-life recent case study story and has several case studies and real-life examples at the end of each chapter for further discussion.Overall, an excellent book to learn from. All the real-life ethical issues will keep you interested and wanting to read more.

As with all college text reading, its never fun. I think I'm giving this text a 4 star only because some of the material was so lame. I mean don't get me wrong, there's quality stuff in it. But there was also material that was just plain logical. If you're a college student, you'd think the same.

The book I received was falling apart. The book front cover was partially separated but it works for what I need it for.

4 stars= some good arguments to consider, and issues it provokes. Being a philisopher student, some of these arguments are strong.Nuntius said: "Keynes, Hayek, and Friedman" were skipped in discussion. I know that Friedman was well included, in the case studies and in some chapters. Look at 4.3 for a real focus. He also said that "Like ssaber, I was disappointed to find a three page "defense" of capitalism and a ten page attack of it in Chapter 4, "The Nature of Capitalism.""I noticed a sentence stating that we can't dismiss a capitalist society because of the fact of where it brought us, where as the other systems didn't do so well. Therefore, I wouldn't really consider this a dismiss on capitalism. For example, in page 158, they say "The debate over capitalism is a large and important one; the presentation that follows should be viewed as a stimulus to further discussion and not as the last word on th pros and cons of capitalism." Furthermore, "complete coverage of capitalism's features has filled many books" (154). This clearly states what the authors intend, as a mere stimulus. In fact, having a whole chapter seems to be sufficient to their intent.Maybe they can expand the subject to add more back and forth criticisms, but we know that debate can be long. As long as they made that statement of it merely being a stimulus, I'm ok with it.After all, capitalism is a very new concept with the foundation of the industrial revolution. Of course debate should ensue. But I guess they should end the chapter stating the "nonetheless, a capitalist framework has got us great heights."God Bless.-NVS

Great Product, great price, fast delivery

It's alright

This book was actually very easy to read. All of the key words are bolded, and each chapter has lots of little summaries on the sides of the pages to help you understand the concepts.

Bought this for my Business class. It's easy to read, although pretty depressing when you get into the theories and you realize how current businesses are so greedy and immoral in their decisions. I bought it used and resold on Amazon. Worth it for the $8 or so that I paid. Better than buying from the campus bookstore.

Astronomy with Small Telescopes: Up to 5-inch, 125mm (The Patrick Moore Practical Astronomy Series)

Review

From the reviews: "Astronomy with Small Telescopes offers the amateur astronomer practical ‘how-to’ advice. Specifically, this book shows the amateur how to get the most performance out of a small telescope. … The chapter entitled ‘Visual Observation of Deep-sky Objects with Small Telescopes’ includes information that would be helpful to the novice amateur. … some readers will appreciate the convenience of having all of this information in one well written and easy to read book. Astronomy with Small Telescopes is recommended for public and school libraries." (Travis Dolence, E-STREAMS, Vol. 5 (10), 2002) "As a regular user of small telescopes to explore the night sky, I was keen to discover if Stephen Tonkin’s book would encourage the newcomer to astronomy and provide useful information for the more experienced observer. I am delighted to say that it succeeds admirably in both respects. … This is a well-produced, informative book which goes a long way to dispel the notion that you need an expensive, large-aperture telescope to enjoy or contribute to the world of astronomy." (Mike Ropelewski, The Deep Sky Observer Magazine, Issue 126, 2001) "This latest book summarizes the experiences of several authors who have used telescopes ranging from a simple 60 mm aperture refractor on an altazimuth mount, through to the workings of the fork-mounted ETX telescope and the portable C5. … the advice given in this book will certainly help to improve the performances of almost any instrument. … the individual chapters made very interesting reading … . I would warmly recommend this book to anyone thinking of buying a portable telescope for work or for pleasure." (Neil English, Astronomy Now, April, 2002) "This is a book concerned primarily with astronomical hardware. Each chapter is written by one of eight contributors, all users of small telescopes. … Kevin P. Daly’s account of his Celestron 114-mm reflector and favourite objects to observe is a pleasure to read, containing much that will be of interest to the newcomer. … this chapter should inspire even the most house-bound armchair astronomer to spend a night under the stars with the telescope." (Nigel Bannister, The Observatory, Vol. 121 (1165), 2001) "The book is part of ‘Patrick Moore’s Practical Astronomy Series’. It discusses the use of telescopes up to 5-inch aperture (125mm) and thus includes a number of modern popular instruments. … I found the chapter on the ETX telescopes very useful … . Apart from the equipment itself, the book contains suggested projects including deep sky and a chapter on ‘meteor observing with a small radio telescope’. A useful and very practical book for the amateur astronomer starting with a first scope." (The Astronomer, Vol. 38 (446), 2001)

This book has some interesting and intriguing ideas for owners of any telescope, not just ones that are 5 inches or less, as suggested by the book. I own an 8 inch Celestron Nexstar 8se, and I found the techniques for observation as suggested in the book to be very useful.

This "book" is mostly a collection of unrelated chapters each by a different person with a modest telescope.Very little advice or" how to do it" in this book.Save your money.

This book is a collection of essays on experiences using small telescopes for observing the heavens. The discussions range from 60mm refractors thru 5 in. "go to" scopes, including a home made 4 in. Newtownian. There is also a short essay on radio astronomy which seems out of place in this text. This book would have been served by better organization. Some of the essays have good insights on observing with these small telescopes, but it pays to look through all the essays, even for those not dealing with the specific telescope one owns or is interested in. This book was published with beginners in mind, but the organization of the book may leave a beginner confused. This is a bit below the average of books in the "Practical Astronomy" series, but a good starting point for owners of telescopes 5 in. in diameter and smaller. The "Radio Telescope" essay, though out of place in this text, gives an insight into non-visual astronomy open to the amatuer astronomer.

Another collection essays by a number of people that purports to be "by" Stephen Tonkin. "Edited by", and inexpertly at that, would be more accurate. Please don't buy this book.

This is a magnificent book to read and to gift. It fills the senses so completely -- ones emotional, spiritual and intellectual needs. The interweaving of emotion, beauty, literature, and the real pleasures of solitude is seamless. Just reading the book, one feels exhilarated in a relaxed and satisfying way. Whether one travels, wishes to travel or was once an avid traveller, this book is for you. And if you are looking for ways to be more comfortable alone, this book is also for you.Alone Time is beautifully and lyrically written -- a must read. There are many great quotes from the author herself and from other more famous people. One of my favourite is from the author herself: “When you’re not sitting across from someone, you’re sitting across from the world.”The book lends itself to much discussion (for book club readers and travellers alike) on the values and sometimes hidden qualities of solitude. Enjoy!

A beautifully written book in which you will learn invaluable information about four cities: Paris, Florence, Istanbul and New York.Although I've visited most of them, I look forward to returning and seeing things through the author's eyes. Her writing takes you along on her journeys, opens the doors to new experiences and makes you feel as though you're there along with her.A great book both for the first time or experienced traveler.

This book spoke to me as I already spend a lot of time alone and I enjoy discovering new places on my own. Her tips and tricks on how to approach a new city or a familiar one are spot on. The joy of new places on ones own is worth a try for anyone who hasn’t done it.

I had high hopes for this book, due to the topic and to the positive reviews. But after barely making it through the first chapter I returned the kindle book for a refund. In the (admittedly short) part that I read, every other sentence cited a study or quoted another writer on the merits/benefits of the experiences the author was at that moment supposed to be unselfconsciously enjoying. It was maddening! Like looking at the world through a pinhole camera. Or eating finger food with gloves on. Somebody else's gloves.

Wonderful reminder of especially the many delights of Paris, it's tiny cafes, lovely parks and the festive lifestyle that is so different from the American rat race and our patienttolerance for drab eateries, drab, fast, tired food in a country where so many spend so little time savoring the moment. An invigorating source of courage for those who have been intimidated by exploring any city alone.

I travel alone, which is what drew me to this book. I really loved it! have some tips for my next nyc trip!

This book will inspire you to travel. The author makes the case that solo travel is for everyone, and outlines the joys and benefits of doing so. Her own experiences (includIng any problems or hiccups) remind you that travel opens your mind and helps you learn about the world around you, as well as yourself. Highly recommend.

Fun, creative, inspiring, and insightful, I enjoyed walking the streets with the author. It was the perfect read in advance of my next trip.

Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left, by Roger Scruton

Review

"The book is a masterpiece, its rather too clever title notwithstanding. In crisp, sometimes brilliant prose, Mr. Scruton considers scores of works in three languages, giving the reader an understanding of each thinker’s overarching aim and his place within the multifaceted movement known as the New Left. He neither ridicules nor abuses the writers he considers; he patiently deconstructs them, first explaining their work in terms they themselves would recognize and then laying bare their warped assumptions and empty pretensions." ―The Wall Street Journal"Scruton’s book is not the dispassionate examination and measured assessment of philosophical arguments typical of analytic philosophers. It is a polemical dissection and indictment of the perceived destructive aims and tactics of the left. Earlier chapters on Sartre and Foucault, and on members of the Frankfurt School, particularly Adorno, are the most engaging." ―Samuel Freeman, The New York Review of Books"Eminent British philosopher and polymath Scruton gives a sharp-edged, provocative critique of leading leftist thinkers since the mid-20th century . . . complex and erudite." ―Publishers Weekly"Caustic, highly recherché, and simply great fun to read for the questing intellectual soul." ―Kirkus Reviews"[H]onestly assesses the political and philosophical contributions of the Left [and] addresses what is likely our most pressing question: ‘Can there be any foundation for resistance to the leftist agenda without religious faith?'" ―Catholic World Report

As an undergraduate, I wondered why the curriculum in the humanities was so narrowly focused, and why some of these alleged-brilliant minds were not only convoluted in their theories, but sometimes deliberately obtuse/obscurantist in their writing. As I progressed to graduate school, things got even worse. The "mathemes" struck me as the Leftist's attempt to give their non-theories a kind of mathematical/scientific patina. The gibberish of "the sign and the signifiier," the incessant invocation of "the other," all of this stuff eventually became a bit wearing.Scrutton does a good job in this short work of separating the wheat from the chaff, in addressing the dominant intellectual schools of thought, and the thinkers who made their "institutional march," first through Europe, who are now well-entrenched in American universities. This book is not the paranoid hit piece that either the title nor the cover art would lead one to believe. Scruton gives credit where it is due, especially to Foucault and Sartre, whose conclusions and solutions may be off-base, but whose keenness of mind and command of history is pretty staggering. The ultimate picture that Scruton paints, however, is one that would be absurdly funny if so many people weren't hurt (literally and psychologically) by the unrelievedly nihilistic philosophies and theories perpetuated by the Frankfurt School, existentialists, Marxists, etc. All of the thinkers whose works and beliefs Scruton details have several features in common: they believe in the sanctity of some abstract "worker" or proletariat, despite having little or no daily interaction with their subjects, and they believe that the Left can never be held accountable for the catastrophic gulf between theory and praxis (especially regarding Marxism and Communism), and above all, they believe that people who don't believe what they believe are not merely viewing things from a different perspective, but are wrong, and either need to be ignored or somehow eliminated from the discourse. The works that Scruton engages are many times pretentious, and, once parsed for content, revealed to be empty shell games. Naturally then, when Scruton critiques the works, he himself has to "wade in the mud" so to speak, so sometimes the reading is itself a chore. But it was a necessary public service Scruton performed in this book, and his sense of humor helps leaven what would otherwise be a punishing wade through the mire. And if you're going to college and you're going to accrue debt and a plethora of nihilistic, useless gibberish as well, you owe it to yourself to read this book and inoculate yourself. Or, if you've already been through the ringer, his book will reassure you that no, you are not alone, and that yes, Bertrand Russell was right: "Man is born ignorant, not stupid. He is made stupid through education." Recommended.

The title is misleading, because it is the most ad hominem part of the book. Scruton calls no one here a 'fool,' in fact here he is paying Foucault a compliment:It is as difficult to do justice to the achievements of Foucault as it is to those of Sartre. His imagination and intellectual fluency have generated theories, concepts and insights by the score, and the synthesizing poetry of his style rises above the murky sludge of left-wing writing like an eagle over mud-flats. Moreover, this flamboyant adoption of the higher vision is a large part of Foucault’s appeal. He is unable to encounter opposition without at once rising, under the impulse of his intellectual energy, to the superior ‘theoretical’ perspective, from which opposition is seen in terms of the interests that are advanced by it. Opposition relativized is also opposition discounted. It is not what you say, but that you say it, that awakens Foucault’s interest. ‘D’où parles-tu?’ is his question, and his stance remains beyond the reach of every answer.Considering how much ground is covered, I think it is a compliment to say the book seemed much shorter than 300 pp. It also seemed up-to-date, although part of it (I'm not sure how much in all) was written in the 1980s. In part, this book is a lament that every faddish new philosophy coming out of Paris is the same old story. The 'critique' is always of capitalism, and the failure of socialism never means abandoning 'leftist values.'Quote:... But the attempt to achieve a social order without domination inevitably leads to a new kind of domination, more sinister by far than the one deposed. The seeds of the new structure of power are present in the organization necessary for the violent overthrow of the old, for, as Andrew Marvell said of Cromwell: . . . those arts that did gain A power must it maintain.A study of the logic of ‘revolutionary praxis’ confirms the celebrated observation of Roberto Michels, that an ‘iron law of oligarchy’ constrains all revolutionary parties towards the opposite of their emancipatory goal. It is a century since Michels – himself a radical socialist – expressed those thoughts, and no socialist has ever bothered to answer him, even though history has confirmed his conclusion at every point. If the book gets off to a slow start, and devotes too much space to some 'thinkers' and less to others, it is nonetheless a trenchant, if depressing look at how the academic left insulates itself from reality and logic. I honestly got a chill toward the end, because I feel the winds of Deleuze et al blowing stronger in the USA today.

This book is essential for those who want two things: (1) a critical overview of new left thinking and (2) specific well-explained reasons why new left thinking is logically untenable and/or a smorgasbord of inanities and platitudes - or in some cases, no more than an intellectual prank. (Lacan, Deleuze and often Foucault with his 'histories'). Scruton does an excellent job in pointing out key difficulties in their work, and in clearly explaining why - in one way or another - the nature and extent of their flaws. I especially like his blunt spoken ways i.e. no weasel words, that so often mar philosophical books by academics. What makes this book especially important is that so many of these non-sensical ideas have trickled down the street level, especially to students who adopt them with a great deal of passion but very little understanding and/or life-experience. Scruton's book is a perfect antidote against such neocortical poison because it effectively combines background knowledge with incisive analysis. If I were still teaching, I would use this book in my classroom.
