good text for doctoral studies

I needed to purchase this book for a college class and it has lots of great, up to date information in it. I am glad I purchased instead of rented because I'm sure I will want it for reference in the future as I take other classes in my informatics curriculum.

This is a good reference book but that is it. I bought this for my class in Informatics. The material is dry and repetitive but there are some good points mentioned. This book is for those who work in the Health Care filed and who use EMR.

I like this book, but not thanks to Amazon. They sent my book to another destination and didn't try to replace my order. So to the next buyer, the book will do it's job in keeping you informed. Informatics is a very complex subject that has many branches that surrounds this subject and can be confusing. But, with technology today it is helpful information.

I don't really know what to tell you about this book. I read part of one chapter before realizing I didn't want to take this class and changed my classes and sent it back. It seems awfully light to have some much in it, and it did not exactly read very well, but I'm sure it gets the job done if you stick with the class.

This looked like it had been a bestseller so I thought I'd try it. Although it was easy enough to read and had no bad grammar or typos, the style is very "flat" and reads more like stage directions than a novel. The author does more "telling" than "showing" if you know what that means. None of the characters are likeable or sympathetic, so the only suspense is to find out "who done it" -- and, again, I didn't care much, beyond mild curiosity. Also, there seemed to be a loose plot thread at the end, that was never explained. A key piece of evidence just seems to go away and the police ignore an obvious witness/suspect. There is also a final twist that the author must have thought would be shocking, but it seems like she had no other idea for how to end the story. If you want a quick read without deep emotional depth or artistic style, you might like it.

Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbors Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor.They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed

There were many good things in this novel; it was suspenseful, fast-paced and slightly unpredicable at times. The story and plot kept me engaged.The writing was mediocre. I found myself becoming frustrated with the "third person" style narrative. When the narration is something the reader repeatedly thinks about, it's probably not a good thing. Narration is something that shouldn't be noticed, but the way this book was written, I noticed it a LOT.There was not one likeable character, not one. It's hard to get excited about a book when you really don't care what happens to the characters. As for the plot, it wasn't anything new - quite predicable.Once everything comes together, the story becomes a bit nonsensical. There is no way the dad would get off scot-free. There are also several characters introduced that never get developed (the husband of the neighbor is one) as well as side stories that never get resolved. There are several loose ends, and that drives me nuts.I've not read anything by this author previously, and I probably wouldn't read another of her books. With that said, the book was good enough to be worth the time.

I read a lot of books, and really have trouble finding fiction that isn't the same old detective murder stories. I thought this was a great story with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It would be hard to talk about the book without giving some of the plot away, but it kept me reading, and was truly hard to put down. I usually read from 11 pm until about 1 am, then go to bed. I ended up staying up until about 2 am or later each night trying to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the book was very well written and easy to read. As soon as I finished it, I found another Shari Lapena book to start.

I hate books like this: no redeeming characters, surprising twists that aren’t really surprising at all, and dull, unimaginative prose. This just isn’t a good book.

The writing style is painfully simplistic. Subject-verb-object. Subject-verb-object. It seems 9 out of 10 sentences begins with a name."Marco sits down. Marco is tired. Marco is trying to think. Anne gazes out the window. Anne is sad. Anne and Marco sit in silence."That's not actually from the book, but it might as well be. It's as if the author has no formal education beyond grade school.The plot is not original by any means. The characters are shallow because they are all described in short, simple sentences. "Anne came from money. Marco did not."I can't believe I paid $13 for this book. Not worth it.

The pictures in this book are very pretty but the book itself is very disappointing. This is organized more like a magazine than a magazine than a book. The Table of Contents includes a list of sections not of patterns. There is no index. I created my own which I have tucked into the first few pages. Patterns appear pages after the photo and there is no direction as to where the pattern is. There are pictures of items that they don't provide patterns for. And some of the patterns are very poorly written. Direct quote from the Spanish Peacock Shawl pattern "Then for some reason, i knitted 1 round and purled 3 rounds. This is where it gets vague, but I see that I repeated...." Train of thought description while analyzing and trying to remember something you created is not a pattern.There are approximately 45 patterns in this book, most of them are written better than the one quoted. 20 are shawls of various shapes including eight circular shawls which was my reason for buying. It includes two cuff-down sock patterns and one toe-up sock pattern. Several lacy sweater-type patterns and a very pretty hat.Including some pics which would have helped me decide whether or not to buy this book.

I purchased A Gathering of Lace years ago at the local yarn shop. When I scanned through it at the shop, I thought that it was a book that I just had to have. That copy has been packed away in temporary storage for almost two years, so I borrowed a copy from the library for the purpose of trying one of the patterns. Now that I'm going through the book with a fine-toothed comb, I'm disappointed. A few of the patterns are gorgeous; the majority are mundane at best. The directions seem skimpy, in my opinion. I've been knitting for years, but I feel like these directions should contain more information and detail. I borrowed the book after seeing a beautiful Spanish lace shawl on Ravelry, the directions for which are supposed to be in the book. I was extremely disappointed to find that these "directions" consist essentially of a photograph of the finished shawl, a few very short comments from Meg Swansen, and a chart for the edging that she attributes to Barbara Abbey's Kntting Lace. There are no written row-by-row directions or charts for the shawl. I have the impression that this was done on purpose. If Meg wants to keep the pattern for the shawl a secret, then she should have selected something else for the book that she doesn't mind sharing. If I had it to do over again, I would not have purchased the book but would have borrowed it from the library in order to scan the couple of patterns that I like.

I almost didn't purchase this book, because I decided the Victorian Lace book was probably more of what I expected a book on lace to be. Then one of the anesthesiologists I work with said she had it and enjoyed it very much. I now have both this book by Meg Swansen and Victorian Lace Today by Jane Sowerby and enjoy them both for different reasons.Victorian Lace has some of the most magnificent lace shawls I've ever seen in my life, but that's all it features. Its variety comes from the uniqueness of its many lace designs and the gradual increase in their complexity from beginner to advanced level. It also discusses the Victorian period and its lace designers. These patterns are stunning, and their character suggests a "special occasion," lace made for a bride, for a new baby, for a new Mom, in short for significant events. Ms Sowerby's book provides patterns which are "lace" as most people probably think of it, very open, airy fabric.Ms Swansen's book, on the other hand, while it presents shawls, features a far greater variety of pattern types. The author of the Gathering of Lace has included patterns for lace gloves (a cold weather type, not an "occasion" type), several very nice sweaters (including a tunic I really have to give a try) a delightful spring hat (which I also want to do) a tam, a clever sachet, a christening grown, and probably the nicest purse I've seen featured in knitting or crocheting books. (They all seem to have to have them these days, but they are not all created equal by any means.)While the lace in Victorian Lace seems much more ethereal, most of the lace products in the Gathering of Lace, even the shawls, are more sturdy fabrics with a denser, less open character to their designs. They are lace by virtue of their technique, a lace technique--yarn-overs, slipped stiches, pass-overs, etc.--which creates openings in the overall knitted fabric. These are practical items, items intended to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis, not used once and kept carefully packed away and treasured.The photos of both books were done by the same photographer and feature a similar venue, similar poses for the models, and similar displays of the lace, especially the shawls. The settings are gorgeous, and the choice of display enhances the lace incredibly well. If it was he who designed the format that the photo displays would have, he did a splendid job. Both books are visually appealing, nice even if even if you don't intend to make the lace, just enjoy the book.Very nice. It would be difficult to decide between the two, which is probably why I have both. Those on a tighter book buying budget than I would probably do well to decide what they want from their lace work before they chose which of them to purchase.

Overall my daughter, who's getting started with the cosplay hobby, is happy with the book. I've read through it, and gotten halfway through a project inspired by one of the projects; a steampunk cyborg arm.The author has an excellent YouTube channel, which provides video on how to do similar things, so why buy the book? Because it's a lot easier to follow instructions in a book as you work through a project at a work bench rather than fiddling with video playback on a notebook or tablet computer, or try to work from memory. Additionally, her channel is excellent, so it feels good to support the artist.There is a lot of emphasis on using Worbla, which is very expensive, but that's not the reason I knocked off a star. I was hoping for more general guidelines and instructions on how to do a type of prop, rather than walkthroughs of doing specific props. It would have been nice for there to be side notes with additional guidelines and tips along the lines of 'If you want to make an X it's a good idea to do Y' and on how to adapt the projects in the book to other projects. There ARE guidelines like that, but I wanted more of that sort of thing, even if it meant putting one less project walk through in the book.For example, it would have been helpful for more guidelines and warnings on how to create templates from plastic wrap and duck tape without wasting time and getting stuff wrong on the first few attempts, like how my flabby arm would be compressed, and result in all the pieces being too small!

My son is a prop builder and page 119 shows his talent in the King Loki costume. There is good info on working with Worbla & EVA foam. Wether you are a creator or not there is so much info and very interesting to read.

this book is great! the patterns and directions are clear yet concise. explanations answered questions that came to mind. pictures demonstrated the process excellently! although i bought this for someone else, as a crafter myself i felt it equipped the reader with everything needed to take on any project of this kind. it is rare to see a design book so clear and well thought out. i highly recommend this book to ANYONE who would like to try this kind of project.

This is the definitive beginners guide for cosplay crafting. I had bought a few of the individual books before from her website but this is a great all in one from one of the best in the world of cosplay.

About the Author

Jinny Blom is a leading garden designer who began her London based landscape design practice in 2000. Jinny works on a wide range of projects and has designed hundreds of gardens all over the world. Her innovative and uniquely thoughtful work has been much lauded and featured in the press internationally. She has designed four award-winning gardens for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and was awarded the coveted gold medal in 2007; along with silver-gilts in 2002 (for her ‘Healing Garden’ developed in collaboration with The Prince of Wales); in 2006 (for Laurent-Perrier); and in 2013 (for her creation commissioned by Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale).  The great-granddaughter of an Impressionist painter, Jinny had a Liberal Arts education in the UK. She trained and practised as a transpersonal psychologist and psychotherapist, working for many years in mental health. In 1996 she chose to devote herself to her lifelong interest in natural landscapes and gardens.  She has been a columnist for The Times, contributed regularly to radio and television worldwide, and in 2002 won BBC Radio Broadcaster of the Year for her Radio 4 Woman’s Hour features. Regardless of the damaged condition that my book came in, if you are looking for a book that gives any instruction or guidance on planting, this is probably not going to be the book for the average gardener. Its a nice book over all, but the photography is just better than mediocre if you’ve ever sat and really explored photography books (Curry, Salgado,etc). And yes, it’s about gardening, I view the book to be more about having something on your coffee table to simply enjoy. Its not a book that will translate well for the average flower/veggie gardener or urban back yard landscape. What’s covered in here is big French countryside fields and large paddock spaces, back yards of big manir houses and English Estates. Inspiring, yes, and lovely too, but the synopsis on the book doesn’t really clarify what you’re buying.

I was so anxious to receive this book. I got it today and I am very disappointed. The photography is not great. The gardens are obviously beautiful, but the colored photographs are just plain deficient.....it may be the cameras used but I think it's the printing that failed. Whatever happened, it is a terrible disappointment for such a wonderfully written book to have such bland photos.

I love this book and think the photographs are beautiful. The text surrounding each photos is more about Jinny Blom's philosophy of gardening rather than showing plans for each garden or an instruction manual - but I personally like that aspect. It feels like her autobiography and the gardens that show her story.

Exquisite coffee table show off book compiled by an amazing gardener I follow and admire.

As a graphic designer just getting into gardening, this book was perfect for me. I learned so much about the principles of landscape design and planting that I now feel empowered to begin designing something gorgeous in my own tiny yard. Blom opens up her design process in a clear and compelling way.

Lovely pictures, and a novel approach to garden design, but she operates on a scale way beyond the scope of the average gardener. I didn't find a lot of information I could adapt to use in my own garden.

I’ve read science fiction off and on through out a long life. This series was a superb example of the genre. It joined modern day technology and extrapolated future seamlessly I thought. Character development good enough to carry the load. The two heroic naval heroes took a bit of a credibility leap but I managed just fine. I’m not sure if there is an extension of the theme by this author beyond the trilogy but will likely find out in time.

What more could you ask for? Characters you love .. including the dolphins .. intriguing story line, plenty of excitement, some romance, some humor and each book has one or more cliff hangers. I had a hard time putting these down. I'm now reading the next one .. Ripple. This author is very detailed and I, for one, really like that. Only one tiny suggestion to the author .. spend a little more time developing your characters. Give them more of a 'past'. Read some Stephen King. He's a master at character development. You, though, are a master story teller. I will read all you can write.

I bought the 3 book set to amazon's recommendation for my kindle. I really thought it would be worth the $7.90 , however it's been more and more disappointing along the way.The imagination for the whole story is great (5 *) but its been losing stars along the way. Book one ends with 3 ***, book 2 ends with 2** 3rd book 1*.You just get lost with so many ridiculous scenes, action, words, people. Something interesting grabs your attention and the NEXT 10 paragraphs are just inconclusive - (What? like nothing important, it becomes so boring, to many words). I had to jump from one paragraph to the next, read maybe 5 to 8 word in each to notice nothing important or interesting is happening.Then there are "action" "scenes" that even in a movie you would fall asleep, it's so exaggerated it becomes more boring. (Come on!!! not even Rocky, Captain America, SpiderMan or Iron Man come close. No, not even James Bond). It's impossible to get through those ridiculous scenes, really. And of course 100% PREDICTABLE in the end of scene.... hero who is almost "dead"... wins.+Spoiler alert + example - ONE WHOLE CHAPTER book 3 "On a plane a gorilla, the heroine, a technician, 4 macho heroes and a STORM and the "outcome" emergency parachute jump all (no runway) "sadly" pilot dies.I am through book 3 had a very hard time to finish it, without any expectations for a great end. (sorry books 4 & 5 out of the question).Sad really because the idea and imagination WAS good, however the development is 80% disappointing. In my opinion the 3 book series would be much better if it were 40% shorter. Needs a lot of editing.

Having never read this author before I purchased this set as a "pig in a poke." I was one of the best purchases I've made recently because I loved the series. Subsequently I purchased the follow-up novel and loved it as well. I'm now awaiting the publication of the fifth novel in this series. Maybe we'll luck out and the entire story will be made into a movie :-)

Not sure how it was compared to some of the big hitters out there. No character development. After 3 books, finally learned hair and eye color of “stars”. Spent too much time developing “mysteries “. After a while, there were so many out there that, I just stopped caring. I didn’t suffer while reading them, but I won’t finish the story line by buying any more. Just lost interest.

I loved these books. The premise is really intriguing and I couldn't put them down - a bit of science and a bit of sci-fi. It is a great mix. Just purchased the 4th (and at the moment, the last) one in the series. Hope there are more to come!

I totally enjoyed this 3-Book Set. It was well written and the story development continued to keep my interest throughout. Love all the characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series !!!

I love this series. It keeps me up all night or (all day), depends on when I start reading. I enjoy the intertwining of the characters and the way their stories float alone and somehow manage to come together at the end, (OR IS IT THE END)I have finished Mosaic and can't wait for the next book.I do have issues with some of the characters but I don't want to give away anything else in case readers haven't gotten through all the books. OH, Michael, I'm patiently waiting for the next one.

I needed more indepth research help than this gave. overall, it seemed very simplified to me, perhaps because I'm a medium to advanced researcher. I've run up against an ancestress who's only apparent record is her tombstone. the family moved a lot, ended up in a burned county, and has been somewhat to very difficult to research. there's apparently no available records for them in VA or TN, little in IL and little in MO, and all but one of 12 children died before 1850. this book is fine for simple problems but doesn't work for mine.

I loved this and much like my other reviews for the genealogy books I have been doing genealogy research for my and other families for other thirteen years so many of these books have repeat or already known info but this book offered those repeated tips and new information which was greatly appreciated.I gave this a five also because if I had found this book when If first started it would have saved me YEARS off my research for many of my female ancestors because once you understand the system and get the tips and tricks you can really get a swing going at finding the females that seem to be "hiding"...

Well-written, well-organized and enjoyable to read, this outstanding genealogical research tool provides an excellent in-depth, insightful, integrated approach to genealogical research, particularly focused on researching our female family members. It contains a good explanation of means of tracing women when their surnames have changed, and very extensive bibliographies that are exhaustively research sources on women's property rights, childbearing and women's health care. It sets out a well-explained technique of developing, writing and preserving one's family story as an organized historical narrative, with all the information one has obtained, so that the information paints a family's portrait(s), gives meaning to facts, organizes the source materials logically, and helps to tell the family who they are, why they are the way they are, and where they came from so that the family's history is preserved. This aspect of the book provides a much needed explanation to "weekend" genealogists on how to handle and develop their research results to make sense of them and to preserve the meaning of them. This is a thoroughly analyzed and helpful book. I have given copies of this book to several people as it responds to research needs at several levels: genealogy, women's rights and issues (property, health, probate/will), family history interests, research skills, even personal journaling and self-discovery through family discovery.Sharon DeBartolo Carmack has an outstanding ability to teach, and I hope she will continue to expand on her collection of genealogy research books.

This is a good start for the novice. Most techniques I already knew. I think there were a couple of things I learned, but not much else. It is not a bad book.
