Skateboarder/writer Sean Mortimer, who helped Rodney Mullen and Tony Hawk with their autobiographies, brings you a wonderful new book about skating. This volume is a collection of interviews on skateboarding and skate culture from a variety of people within the skateboarding subculture and industry. It's far more thorough and detail than I expected when I bought it sight-unseen. If you are at all interested in the history or culture of the sport, this volume is indespensible.

I grew up skating with and watching these guys, brings back so many memories for me that I have read it so many times...it's showing wear.

Thank you so much! My husband is an avid skateboarder and he started reading the book immediately after he got it on Christmas!

The Dogtown movies got people interested in the history of skateboarding, but Sean Mortimer's book throws a wider net to encompass some of the biggest names in skating. It's not a book about contests, sponsorships and who made up what tricks (although that is a component of the book). To me it really was a celebration of what skating meant to-, did for- and brought about in the lives of these skaters. Readers will find out how some of these guys used skating to escape unhappy family lives; how it feels to be a celebrity at 14 and then a has-been at 18; what it's like to be so obsessed with a "hobby" that nothing else matters. There are funny stories about being on the road; meeting skating idols and then beating them in competition; and a bunch of other inside info that really makes these skaters seem more real than an any X-Games interview can. It's all told in the words of the skaters with great photography.If you have any interest in skateboarding get this book.

As a skateboarder, I found this a very interesting book. I simply couldn't put it down. It largely consists of extracts of interviews with skateboarders about all aspects of skateboarding and is written in their own words.This is fortunate because Sean Mortimer is not a good writer. He ghost-wrote Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen's autobiographies and did not do a good job at all. I've seen articles written by both Hawk and Mullen in skateboard magazines over the years and in my opinion both can write better than Mortimer. Those two books are both readable - but only because the stories themselves are so compelling. The writing style is amateurish to say the least. Mortimer should have stuck to skating. Unfortunately, his poor writing does creep into Stalefish via the small introductory sections. Mercifully, these can be skipped.

While Sean's work on Rodney Mullen's biography wasn't quite what I hoped, Stalefish is an awesome, often intriguing collection of almost roadtrip tales from the legends who've made skateboarding into what it is today.There's a lot of funny stories here making you realize just how haphazard the whole skate scene was back in the 1980's and early 1990's.The layout and the production values are excellent too. Highly recommended to especially those who grew up on skateboarding back in the day.

Bought this book for English class during my first semester in college. Really provides you with a better understanding of skateboarding and its history. The book features a versatile selection of legendary skateboarders. I was fortunate enough meet Sean, and got my copy signed. Awesome author and awesome book!

He possesses a unique ability to present complicated biblical concepts on the Holy Spirit in an accessible and acceptable manner. He also takes a prayerful and systematic approach in presenting all of the biblical teachings on the ministries of the Holy Spirit. Written in a mostly non-technical, conversational style, Professor Ryrie’s teaching on the Holy Spirit is very organized and easy to follow. He carefully walks the student through the Holy Spirit operations in the work of creation and its work and power in the men and women of the Old Testament era. He carefully explains the differences between being baptized with the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit. He teaches in great length the truths regarding the different spiritual gifts and the gift of Tongues. This book is an excellent course of study for pastors and for the layman. It is also a tremendous help and source of material for the Sunday school teacher. It is also suitable for use as a textbook in Bible Colleges and Institutes. It is a good read!

This is a great companion to I Once Spoke in Tongues. Ryrie is a cessationist so this book is written from that point of view. I purchased this book for a course in Pneumatology. Ryrie is excellent at taking complex material and breaking it down for even a layman. I recommend this product to anyone desiring to know more about the Holy Spirit from a view outside the wacky teachings which are far too plentiful in our culture.

I have a greater appreciation of the Holy Spirit as a separate person but also a concretized part of the Trinity our foundation for our belief in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit all being one at the same time. After reading this book you have no doubt of arriving at that conclusion.

this is the most exhaustive study on the Holy Spirit I have ever read

This is not light reading, but is fact filled while still remaining understandable. It is a good scripture based teaching on the person of the Holy Spirit and I recommended it as reading to those I teach. If you want to learn, make certain to have a highlighter or two handy while reading because Ryrie's book is very rich!

This is a great book for an in depth study of the Holy Spirit!!

I'm giving this 5 stars because it is everything it claims to be. But my son got two joke books at Christmas: this and "Laugh out Loud Jokes for Kids" by Rob Elliott. At 7 years old, my son likes this book, but prefers Elliott's book to this one because this one contains a lot of things he doesn't understand. In a year or two, he'll likely prefer this one, as it has much more content and far more variety, but if you're considering which of these to buy, perhaps a 9-10 year-old would prefer this, but a 7 or 8 year-old might prefer something a little simpler.

I like this book. There is a large variety of content. The thing I don't like is the print color. It's light blue and green. The light blue is a bit of a strain on the eyes because of the lack of good contrast.

Got my 8 year old a bunch of joke books for Christmas as he loved a few others he’d gotten at the library. This was the only stinker. Yes, kids joke books are bad, this one is plain just not funny. Even my son said “these don’t even make sense”. Don’t waste your time.

I made the mistake of buying this for my son. From the moment he got it, I have not had peace. The jokes are easy to ready and funny to kids, for adults, they are groaners. (Well some were funny to adults as well)My son loves this book, and can barely get through a joke without laughing.I gave this 5 stars because it was a great gift for my son... Not so much to me. (Pretend it is a drum set and buy for a relative)

There are really inappropriate jokes in this book. Like one about Terrorism. :(

Bought this for my 7 year old for xmas. He loves jokes and riddles, and thusly this book. Some of it was corny or mistyped, but all in all it was good for a young kid. I don't know if I'd recommend it for kids much older though.

Was very disappointed, it only has kindergarten jokes in there......

I ordered this for my 8 year-old godson. He had been asking me for good riddles and seems to really like this book.

This book was simply delightful! The preschool and first graders I read it to, where I volunteer, loved it. Both the illustrations, which were set in the early 1950's, and the text were excellent! The text was simple enough for younger preschoolers and engaging and complex enough for older preschoolers and children in first or second grade. It is great for one on one story telling or for a larger group of ten to twentyfive depending on the age group. Children loved to point out Elliot and the little mouse on each page. My only disappointment was that the little mouse didn't have a proper name, but the children had a lot of fun guessing his or her name! This is a touching story that has many teachable moments, the first of which is, that children should notice, be kind to, befriend and assist if needed, those children who are different from themselves. Also, this unique book teaches that everyone has problems and that some people have more difficult problems than others. And finally, this story teaches that we can accomplish more if we help each other out on a particular task, like Elliot finally getting his cupcake with the help of the little mouse. You know, I'm not a child, and I don't have any children as well. But despite of this I bought this book and two other ones about Little Elliot. These books will tell you a few short but very cute and kind stories about that wonderful polka-dotted elephant and his friends, and these simple stories will touch your heart without a doubt, and will make you think about some important things in the life, no matter what is your age. They also have absolutely amazing, beautiful and of course very cute illustrations of excellent quality. I love good pictures, and pictures of these books definitely pleased me very much.Little Elliot will take a good place in your library, and maybe in your soul too (in mine he already did).

I bought this for my 2-year-old son for Christmas. He absolutely loves it. As soon as we finish reading it he begs me to read it again. We have fun finding the mouse or little Elliot throughout the story (on pages where it isn't super obvious). It also helps that we are both big cupcake fans. I think this book will continue to be great once he can understand that he might relate to the little elephant who is small in the big city. I love the muted drawings that look very 1940's, this is a really beautiful book and a great addition to our library!

The 1940s-style illustrations are what really make this book perfect, but the story is a perennial favorite too- a simple, touching message of kindness and friendship.

Little Elliott and his friend Mouse have won our hearts! What a delight Little Elliott is and his view of 1930s New York City is beautifully detailed as well. We have "Little Elliott, Big Family" and we can't wait for Mike Curato to publish more tales of Little Elliott and Mouse's adventures. In the meantime we'll keep reading and rereading the first two in the series, because they truly are enjoyable again and again. Which says a lot, because as the parent who is reading the books to the kids there are few books that I can finish and actually enjoy reading all over again immediately after!

For anyone who has felt small or insignificant in some way, this book will give you hope. Elliot finds what he needs to change his sadness to feeling on top of the world! This book touched me in so many ways. Besides making me smile, I identified with Elliot's love of cupcakes, my favorite sweet, too. I too loved that he likes small treasures, There's so much fun in finding a small treasure, just like the raccoon Dewey Bob recently published by Judy Schachner. I recommend Dewey Bob, too. Elliot and Dewey Bob would be fast friends in searching for small treasures.

This is a nice book with great illustrations. It is a great book that one can learn about kindness from. I would also recommend it to educators who want to use a picture book as part of their urban communities lesson.

About the Author

Luigi Pirandello was born of rich, middle-class parents in Girgenti (Agrigento), Sicily, on 28 June 1867. As a young man he studied at the Universities of Palermo, Rome, and Bonn, where he gained his doctorate in 1891. His first published work, Mal giocondo (1889), was a collection of poems. It was followed by other volumes of poems, critical essays, novels, short stories, and over forty plays. In 1894 he married Antoinetta Portulano, the daughter of his father's business associate. Financial disaster and a severe illness brought on by the birth of their third child drove his wife to a hysterical form of insanity. Only in 1918, when her presence in the family constituted a real threat to their daughter's safety did Pirandello agree to have his wife committed to an asylum. The enormous emotional strain he felt at this time is reflected in the intense pessimism found in his work. Pirandello's first real success in the theatre came about in 1921 when Six Characters in Search of an Author was performed. Henry IV followed the next year and confirmed his position as a playwright. In the following years Pirandello travelled abroad extensively. He embarked on a career as a producer and in 1925 founded his Art Theatre in Rome. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934 and died in Rome on 10 December 1936.Mark Musa is a professor at the Center for Italian Studies at Indiana University. A former Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellow, Musa is the author of a highly acclaimed translation of Dante's Divine Comedy.

I've owned a dozen copies over the years, and needed a new one. This is so brilliant, I don't have words to describe it. I worked in L.A. theatre and know the script well -- I also taught scriptwriting at a local L.A. campus and always used this as an example of brilliant writing.

A classic by an extremely imaginative author. It is translated from Italian which is evident at places in somewhat stilted language. But quite readable excepting of course the complex and often ambiguous relationships among the characters.

The real beginning of the absurdist movement. It is actually a philosophical argument between Plato and Aristotle put into the framework of a play. Nominalism vs. Realism in the aftermath of the First World War..

I enjoyed reading this play. I'd love to see it performed on stage.

Honestly, I found it just too depressing and the language too old fashioned and verbose to be very enjoyable, though it was undoubtedly well written.

Existentialism at its best in this play. Six lost characters looking to play out the drama of their lives find a manager willing to hear them out, but he can't possibly grasp the reality of their situation. Well written and enjoyable as it is painful to read.

Pirandello asks us to consider the idea that we are looking for an author to write, or rewrite our lives. But we each want to be our own author, characters and actors with complete control of our story. In this classic the various characters get out of hand - they cannot be controlled!

I only gave this 3 stars because I feel it was either rushed to be written, not well thought out, or released early. The ending was horrible. I feel like there needed to be either a 4th book or this one needed to be longer to include all the details that I will leave out for those of you wishing to read it.It is written just like the previous 2 so it's an easy read and you won't want to put it down due to the length.

The story moves very quickly and leaves the reader kind of hanging at the end. At points there is an extreme amount of detail of travel of a few miles and near the end, there is 100 miles of travel in a few paragraphs. It was a little frustrating. The good was that the story is very interesting and practical today.

Just finished reading the last book of this series. Great job! Good story and great characters. And for once a semi happy end

Ending was a bit soft, but the rest of the story was really good 👍the characters were believable. The town setting seemed like any small town in America.

I enjoyed all three books. My only disappointment was when I learned that there was no book number 4 in the series.

I've really, truly loved this trilogy, and I've found it a refreshing change from the usual fare. Most novels in the SHTF/TEOTWAWKI genre keep things pretty simple and shallow. They give you a protagonist, some kind of destination and a bunch of obstacles along the way. While they're almost always fun, they can sometimes be a little paint by numbers. The hero survives a car accident, then he survives an ambush, then he survives a kidnapping, and so on and so forth.This series was different. There was all the usual stuff, the bad guys, injuries and challenges the heroes have to overcome, but this series wasn't just about the physical challenges. It was more about the ethical questions you'd have to face if society collapsed around you. How much do your principles matter to you, and how much of the things you value are you willing to abandon in order to survive?In the last two books, Pam emerged as the mama bear and the moral center of the group. She's a badass, and she has no problem whupping the butts of those who need to be whupped, but there are some lines she won't cross. She put it best herself. "We've let a whole bunch of rules fall by the wayside since the power went out, a lot more than I'm comfortable with. How many more can we afford to lose before we stop being ourselves? Before we stop being Americans?" It's this kind of thing that set this series apart from the rest, and kept me reading page after page long after bedtime.Willow Falls isn't without its flaws. I think maybe a couple of the characters could have been rolled into one, and book two was a little confusing at times with the way it skipped between the two main groups, but all in all this is one of the best EMP series I've read in a long while. It's not just a fun read. It's a smart read, and it's got a lot of heart.

I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed in this book of the series, especially since the previous volume was a good one. The bad guys/invading force that caused so much destruction were not a factor in this book. The heroic bravery of the town to fight back again the invading force was replaced by a lynch mob town. The new bad guys were miscreants from a hospital who, despite an intricate and well coordinated trap, only manage to grab one person besides the poor woman who was in the hospital. This did not seem very feasible. To top it off, the book and possibly the series ends in an anti-climatic whisper.

I just finished the three books in this series and they were entertaining and spell binding. I've often wondered about what would happen in a situation like this - the only thing missing is I believe the new federal government would have declared war on North Korea and turned their whole country into a radioactive parking lot paved in green glass.I also have always believed a CME is more likely than an EMP. ...anyway these are three good books!
